Winners and Finalists 2002
|
Pocket PC magazine's From over 1,400 pieces of software listed in Pocket PC magazine's Encyclopedia of Software and Accessories, we nominated 436 for the magazine's Best Software Awards 2002. From these nominees, 158 finalists were selected with 57 of them voted as winners in their respective categories. Nitin Gupta, our third-party products editor, created the Encyclopedia. With 10-15 new Pocket PC-related products released weekly, the Encyclopedia was introduced to make the rapidly growing product listings more accessible to our readers. In the Encyclopedia, Nitin divided end-user Pocket PC software into 9 main categories: Communication, Games, Information Managers, Internet, Multimedia, Personal, Text and Reference, Travel, and Utilities. These were further divided into 57 sub-categories ranging from Puzzle Games to Travel Guides to Multimedia Video. Initially, the award nominees were selected by Nitin from the Encyclopedia. Nitin made his selections based on his experience reviewing software, on articles by online reviewers, and on user opinion. Pocket PC magazine's Board of Experts reviewed and refined Nitin's list to come up with the formal Pocket PC Awards 2002 Nominations list. Software versions released after July 2002 were not considered in the voting. We did not include the enterprise or developer categories from our encyclopedia. Each member of our Board of Experts chose to judge one or more categories, with an average of 4 judges per category. They voted for first, second, and third place in each category. The top vote-getters in each category became finalists and winners. The winners were first announced in a Hollywood ceremony at the Pocket PC Summit, October 21-24. For more comments about the process, please see my Pocket View column. The rest of this article is devoted to Pocket PC Award winners and finalists. Our 2003 Buyer's Guide contains descriptions of all the nominees. In the next issue we will publish many of the comments of the judges. |
