Windows CE Services version 2.1 Upgrade

Microsoft has announced the release of Windows CE Services 2.1. This upgrade adds several new features for Handheld PCs and Palm-size PCs powered by Windows CE 2.0.

• File conversion and other synchronization settings are tailored to the Palm-size PC, letting you configure your PC to sync with a Palm-size PC, a Handheld PC, or as many of both as you like!
• New Microsoft ActiveSync^™ support for Mobile Channels lets you update your Palm-size PC with your favorite Web channels every time you connect to your PC!
• File synchronization for Palm-size PC lets you sync your Rich Ink Notes with Microsoft Word!
• ActiveSync is now compatible with Microsoft Outlook 98 messaging and collaboration client beta version 2.2 and beta versions of Microsoft Windows 98 operating (Beta 3) and Microsoft Windows NT operating system 5.0 (Beta 1). Get your Handheld PC or Palm-size PC ready for the latest releases of Microsoft Outlook and Windows!
• Improved Partnership Wizard helps you set up your Handheld PC or Palm-size PC fast!
• Improved handling of Internet AutoConnect configuration during Windows CE Services setup.
• Improved handling of previous modem configurations on Microsoft Windows NT-based systems.
• Application Manager now enables easier installation of applications to a PC card on your Handheld PC or Palm-size PC!
• Improved ActiveSync support for Daylight Savings Time for Southern Hemisphere countries when using Outlook 97 version 8.03 or later. Early versions of the Handheld PC may require a device update to complete this. Check with your device manufacturer for availability.

This upgrade is provided to upgrade Windows CE Services version 2.0 only. You must ensure that you have installed Windows CE Services version 2.0 before installing the upgrade. This upgrade does not support Windows CE operating system software version 1.x devices.

Windows CE 2.0 Service Pack 1

 The Windows CE 2.0 Service Pack 1 makes the following improvements:

• Enables file copy operations during power cycling. System lock-ups had been reported when a unit powered down to conserve energy, or while copying large files or sets of files to Compact Flash, PCMCIA ATA Flash, or SRAM cards.
• Enables copying and pasting one folder into another where the folder's name differs by ONLY the last character (for example: pasting a folder named "Doc" into a folder named "Doc1"). Doing this has caused the device to crash.
• Permits your H/PC to connect to more online service providers by enhancing CHAP authentication to support up to 256-character responses.
• Allows long-term use with network connections. Continuous network use degrades performance over time. The service pack addresses known issues associated with this problem.
• Enables you to individually set any event sound to the .WAV file of your choice without disrupting any other settings.
• Displays the correct time in Calendar appointments regardless of location or daylight savings time status in all regions of the world.
