Pocket PC to replace your Handheld completely?

Hello Dr. Zabrek. I just read your article in the July/August issue of Pocket PC magazine. You give quite an endorsement of the new Compaq device.

As I recall from previous articles, you were a Jornada 680 user. I am too, and I use it extensively for business and personal use, including notetaking in meetings. I am interested in how you found the transition from keyboard to pen for your practice. I would like to have a smaller device that fits more easily in a pocket and the iPAQ could fit the bill, but I'm worried that the Pocket PC doesn't lend itself to taking notes rapidly. I have tried a Palm V without success in this regard.

Have you moved to a PocketPC entirely, or do you still use the Jornada 680? Many thanks for taking a moment to answer.

Arnie Simpson

Arnie, I have surprised myself that the transition was not all that difficult. In this issue of Pocket PC magazine, I review the Targus Stowaway keyboard. The addition of this full-sized keyboard allows me to take full advantage of Pocket Word. (Something that was impossible without this add-on device.) I actually used it to type my review using my Jornada 548. (I am hoping that it will be available for the iPAQ by the end of the year.) I only use the keyboard when I am using the Pocket PC for extended periods of time. For quick entry, I like the new Microsoft Transcriber, and the pop-up keyboard.

The new Windows CE 3.0 OS is better than that on the Jornada 680, and I think that you will have little difficulty making a transition. I must stress, however, I do not know how you use your device, so how it works for you will certainly depend on what applications you are using most frequently. Good luck, and let me know how it works! -- Ed Zabrek
