Year's Top 10 PC Companion Web sites
The year is drawing to an end, and we've seen a lot of activity in the Windows CE marketplace. We've seen the release of Windows CE versions 2.0 and 2.1, and new form factors such as the Palm-size PC, the Auto PC, and now the Handheld PC Pro. There has also been an online explosion of great Web sites devoted to Windows CE. I wanted give you an update on the top ten, the best of the best, the sites that I feel deserve to be on everyone's list of favorites. The truth is more than ten deserve to be on this list. I apologize if I leave your favorite off. Let me know about it.
Chris De Herrera's Windows CE site has just about everything you would want to know about Windows CE. Chris is an online consultant for AOL's Windows CE Forum, a columnist for Microsoft Comm Link, and a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional - Windows CE. Chris has FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) documents covering just about ever Windows CE question there is, from Active Sync and PC card Modems to Infrared and Network Clients. Chris is also a contributing writer for Handheld PC Magazine and his Web site has links to the articles he has written for us and for Microsoft. This site is continually updated so make sure to stop back often.
Craig Peacock also has a comprehensive, and continually updated site on a wide variety of Windows CE topics. He has an excellent section for Palm-size PC, lots of FAQs, tips, and articles that Craig has written. Craig has designed his site to be viewed with a desktop PC or on the H/PC with Pocket Internet Explorer. Craig also writes for Handheld PC Magazine (see Craig's Profile in this issue).
CEMonster is probably the most comprehensive source of freeware, shareware or demoware for Windows CE. The site, from the same folks who maintain Tucows, is very well organized, with a number of well-thought-out categories.
CECity is another very comprehensive site that is updated regularly. Topics covered include software, hardware, accessories, reviews, support, tips, and links to other Windows CE sites. CECity has a very comprehensive message board section, covering software, hardware, bug reports, classified, wish lists, and more. They also have a special section for developers.
This is Microsoft's Windows CE homepage and the place to get the latest news about the operating system, hardware and approved software, and more. There are links to separate pages for each PC Companion, Embedded systems and more. Microsoft has some great freeware available for download including Pocket Streets and PowerToys.
HPC.net is one of the first Windows CE sites to come online and has kept their site up to date and very easy to maneuver around in. This is also the home of the Windows CE Talk mailing list, a must for anyone seeking support from other users and developers. HPC.net has lots of links, news, downloads reviews and tips. Well worth going back to often.
