Is MicroSD Too Large For You?

While MicroSD cards, like the one above are now appearing with 2GB or more, that's nothing compared to what we may see in the future:

Researchers at Caltech and UCLA have managed to create a 16K byte memory circuit that is the size of a white blood cell!

At that density, it works out to over 100 gigabits per square centimeter - almost 10 times as dense as currently available memory devices (such as the Kingston MicroSD card above.)

One of the students on the project was quoted as saying that they have shown they can increase the density to about 10 times what they achieved, but then they "begin to run out of molecules".

Fortunately for those of us with 40+ year-old eyes, they say we won't see this technology appear for at least ten years. I expect by then we will all be needing multi-terabyte memory cards, so perhaps we are reaching a limit in size with MicroSD after all.

I do not have a problem with cramming more memory into a given amount of space.

As an end user, I should be given a product that can be handled relativeky easily.

Easy being with simple tools and easy as in not being too expensive compared to other forms of memory.

Right now, I like the fact that the Micro SD card can fit into a Min SD slot with an adapter and then into and SD slot using another adapter sleeve. As Becky says, Micro SD is small enough.

Seeing other forms of memory technology to appear on the market that provides faster access or added benefit is good for competition.

Regardless of how small physically the memory chips get, I hope that the manufacturers maintain some sense and install the memory onto interface boards that are user friendly in size in the end.

Of course I agree with all you said. My comments were a bit "tongue-in-cheek". The biggest (pun intended) problem I see with current memory card designs is that they all use serial data transfers that greatly limit their speed. If a faster card standard is developed, it would be possible to have removable "main memory" in PDAs and phones - like we have in desktops and laptops. To me, this is more important that continued higher capacities.
