Free Mobile Services, News on New Devices
This week I have updates on two mobile services: KeyToss mobile portal, and the Slifter mobile shopping service. Plus, we have the news from HTC that the Touch HD won’t come to the U.S. — but that the HTC Fuze is supposedly coming from AT&T later this month.
KeyToss Mobile Portal Releases New Features
KeyToss is one of many great mobile portals — web home pages designed for your small screen that give you quick access to the Internet’s most popular and powerful offerings. The site’s special feature is the ability to easily customize it so that you have a personalized mobile portal that links to the resources you use the most.
KeyToss recently released a new upgrade that increases your ability to customize it and also adds Gmail status and quick access to “mobile transcoders” — web sites that redesign, on-the-fly, desktop web pages so that they work well on the small screen of your device.
The new version lets you add virtually any link to you personal web pages, and share them with others. KeyToss enables four types of custom links: 1) links to mobile-friendly pages, 2) links to pages that are automatically converted to mobile format using one of four mobile transcoders, 3) links to user-selected news feeds, 4) and links to Google Local searches customized to your location.
You can choose from a set of pre-selected links, or enter your own links, either by typing them directly, or by clicking a bookmarklet while browsing from a PC.
Other new features include a Gmail status module and a mobile transcoder module. The Gmail module alerts you to new messages in the selected Gmail account, and provides a direct link to the Gmail Mobile website. The mobile transcoder module gives you a choice of four mobile transcoders — Google, Mowser, Skweezer, and Phonify — to convert any web page into mobile-friendly format.
You can access KeyToss by pointing your mobile browser at m.keytoss.com. The service is free.
Slifter Mobile Shopping
Slifter is a neat service that lets you use your phone to search for nearly 350 million products. You simply enter slifter.com into your mobile browser, then input the name of the item you’re interested in buying and your Zip Code. Slifter returns a list of results, with each result giving the name of the store and how far it is from your current location.
Select a store, and then it returns information such as whether the item is in stock, the address and phone number of the store, a small map of its location, and detailed information about the product.
Bad News and Good News on HTC Touch Devices
According to an item in Pocket PC Thoughts, HTC issued a notice saying that the HTC Touch HD won’t be coming to the U.S. That was a big letdown for many, because this appeared to be one of the hottest HTC devices yet with a touch interface.
But then rumors of the HTC Fuze from AT&T began surfacing, including a post in our Expert Blogs by Steve Green. The specs are pretty impressive, though not quite so interesting as the HD. It may be available later this month.
