Free Skyfire Browser, Palm Treo Pro, Android Coming, Touch Pro Reviews
This is your chance: the impressive Skyfire browser is freely available until August 30. Also, this week there’s lots of device news, including the official announcement of the Palm Treo Pro, the September arrival of the first Android device (from T-Mobile), and Reviews of the HTC Touch Pro.
Free Skyfire Browser Available This Week
Skyfire may be the fastest Windows Mobile browser in addition to being the only one that is Flash-enabled. Until now, this free browser has been available in a limited beta test. But in honor of the Olympic feat of Michael Phelps, it’s being made generally available (only to those in North America) until August 30. Use the special code “Michael8” to download.
Skyfire’s aim is to give you the experience of a desktop browser on your mobile device. You pretty much get everything: full audio, video, images, dynamic Flash content, advanced Ajax, Java and more, putting it ahead of other mobile browsers.
According to a report on WindowsForDevices, testing showed that Skyfire trounces Opera Mobile 9.5 and the iPhone’s Safari in speed tests, and both of those are known for their speed. The report also discusses other very impressive features of Skyfire.
Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta Available
Speaking of Opera Mobile 9.5, note that a beta is currently available. This browser is also pretty spectacular. It’s fast, has a new user-interface that includes iPhone-like finger-touch features such as pan and zoom, improved standards support such as AJAX, tabbed browsing, offline browsing, and more. As a public beta, though, note that it still has issues.
Palm Treo Pro
Last week saw the official announcement of the Palm Treo Pro, which will be available unlocked in the coming weeks. This phone has a front-facing keyboard, 320 x 320 touch screen, quad-band GSM/EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 2-megapixel camera, and microSDHC slot.
Engadget has posted a gallery of photos and promises a full review soon.
HTC Touch Pro Reviews
There continues to be a lot of excitement surrounding the HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro. Reviews of the latter are starting to appear, including a detailed review on PocketNow, with photos, screen shots, an unboxing video, and benchmarks. Also, you'll find a very enthusiastic review on Tracy and Matt’s Blog, and a gallery of photos on the Boy Genius Report.
First Android Phone from T-Mobile
Android is Google’s open mobile phone platform and is unrelated to our topic of Windows Mobile. But it has the potential to stir things up in the same way the iPhone has done, so I mention it here.
The Boy Genius Report relays the rumor that the first Android phone is coming September 17 from T-Mobile for the low price of $150 to current subscribers.
