The first real-world battery life reports on the HTC TyTN (HTC Hermes, O2 Trion)
One of the most often asked questions regarding the successor, the HTC TyTN (a.k.a. Hermes and O2 Trion), of the HTC Wizard (a.k.a. imate K-Jam, T-Mobile MDA Vario, Qtek 9100, MDA Vario, XDA mini S, SPV M3000, VPA Compact II, Dopod 838) has always been its battery life.
XScale-based Pocket PC Phone Edition devices, in the past, have never excelled in battery life, and it was the Wizard that was the first PPC PE HTC device that relieved the users from having to recharge every (other) day. A lot of Wizard users have mentioned they wouldn’t upgrade to a device with a battery life of one or two days: noone would want to upgrade to a device, even with considerably better specifications, with a much worse battery life, bringing back the times and the need for daily recharges of the mobile phones of the early 90’s.
Now that the TyTN is already sold in Germany, there are already some reports on its battery life. For example, a new owner here on XDA-Dev states that the battery only needs to be recharged every five days (with the PDA unit not frequently used, of course). Also, he said the 400 MHz Samsung CPU in the TyTN is especially fast - about, according to him, four times faster than the 195 MHz TI CPU in the Wizard (of course, I'd say he's a bit exaggerating). The latter is what I’ve expected based on the past speed benchmarks of the Samsung CPU’s (see for example the SuperTux real-world benchmark results where the 266 MHz Samsung CPU in the 1940 delivered far better results than the 400 MHz PXA-255 in the iPAQ 2210).
This is definitely good news for all you TyTN fans :)
