Do you like platformer scroller games like Sonic, Rayman and the like? Then, you may definitely be interested in viex games' newest title, Gold Miner Joe available here for $14.95 (a 10-minute trial version is also available). The game itself follows the usual Sonic pattern and is a very good Pocket PC port of ArcadeLab's "Gold Miner Joe" desktop (PC/Mac) game. As usual, I don't elaborate on how the game should be played because if you've ever played a platformer game, then, you know what they are like. If you haven't played any platformer, on the other hand, you definitely should give this title a try. Pros
  1. Broad device compatibility and operating system version compliance. It's compatible with all operating systems starting with Pocket PC 2002. In my tests, it worked great on my five test devices (HTC Wizard with the latest i-mate ROM; the WM5-upgraded HP iPAQ hx4700 (yes, the game is compatible with the device!), HP iPAQ 2210, Dell Axim x51v and Pocket Loox 720). Unlike with the last (free) platformer I've reported on, OpenJazz, it has no button assignment problems. The only issue that should be mentioned is that you shouldn't assign any functionality to the red/green phone buttons on the HTC Wizard. Use the other buttons for the additional functionality. Also, I had slight problems with setting up the hx4700 hardware keys at first - setting up them didn't work at first. Then, explicitly initiating the assignment process from the setup menu solved the problem and I could assign all the four functionalities to hardware buttons.
  2. nice background in-game music, different for each map
  3. the scrolling is very smooth even on "slow" and VGA devices
  4. it has a (HiRes-only) Palm OS version too (as with the other titles of the same developer)
Cons Couldn't really run into any (except for the very minor button assignment problems). How does it compare to the alternative platformer games? Not bad, even if you take into account it being a commercial title, unlike OpenJazz and Bayside Studios' Quigley's Quest 1.10, the - apart from OpenJazz's button problems - in my opinion, two best platformers. (Note that, while Gameloft's Rayman Ultimate is also a very nice game, I don't recommend it any more because it's no longer sold and is impossible to be acquired from online sources any more.) These three games are of about the same quality and are all recommended. Verdict Recommended. Give the trial a try. UPDATE (03/23/2007): Allen Gall's review
