Did you like Lemmings? Then, you may most probably want to check out Lightworks Games’ brand new Lemmings clone, Cavemen. The interesting aspect of the game that it’s based on the Compact Framework (1.x; 2.0, fortunately, not required). Fortunately, this doesn’t result in really annoying speed problems – not even on the slower devices I’ve tested the game on (HTC Wizard, iPAQ 3660), unlike some other, CF-based games (see for example this review on IBE Group's CF2-based, new Star Invader II). There are speed problems (as the PocketGamer review also points this out), but they are related to the not really optimal in-game speed setting, which, fortunately, can be made much faster– and can also be paused (while you will still be able to assign different tasks to different cavemen). You’ll want to switch between the three diffent speeds to both speed up gameplay and being able to safely assign tasks to your cavemen. Unfortunately, the in-game music is pretty repetitive (and mono). There’s no native VGA support either (that is, the game is pretty pixelizated on VGA devices.) The game runs OK on all my test Pocket PC’s (iPAQ 3660 (with the PPC2k2 CF1 SP3 available for example here) iPAQ 2210, Pocket Loox 720, Dell Axim x51v, HTC Wizard; all – except the Pocket PC 2002 iPAQ 3660 – with default CF versions they are shipped with.) I’ve even tested it on my retro Casio Casiopeia E-125 (PPC2k MIPS CF1 SP3 CAB is available here) to see how it runs on these really old devices. It wasn’t able to read the game’s icon – it just crashed on trying to do this (this isn’t an unknown problem with some other games too – see for example Absolutist’s Trivia Machine , which does the same as can be read here). I’ve tested this on two of my E-125’s – none worked. (Incidentally, my PPC2k2 3660 wasn’t able to render the icon of the game but at least it worked.) I heartily recommend PocketGamer.org’s review of the game available here.
