AIM Productions has produced several quality titles (you may want to check out section 2.3 here for a quick listing/evaluation of most of them). Their latest release, Gyroid, is a quite decent space shooter available here and costing $14.99/€14.99.
There isn’t much to be said about the game: you’ll find out what it is about in a few seconds. I, therefore, only concentrate on the stuff that potential buyers would like to know: How it compares to other, similar titles? Does it offer anything superior to them?
There’re few pseudo-3D titles similar to this game. The one that exist are the following:
The aging, “oldie but goldie†(and fully WM5-compliant - just tested it on my x51v) Interstellar Flames by Xen Games is about of the same quality/playability.
The also pretty aged Metalion2 by ZIO Interactive (download here), which is also WM5-compliant (but not with the WM5 hx4700, where it complains about “data file not foundâ€) has the advantage of being able to be controlled by the stylus (which is painfully missing from the AIM title). It, however, has a much more boring in-game music, much fewer powerups and, visually, isn’t as nice as Gyroid (it's even more pixelizated).
The now-free Solterra by Blacksmith Studios (see review here) is a bit more boring than this title, but it supports the Intel 2700G 3D chip in the Dell Axim x50v/x51v and, therefore, may be a better choice (and, again, it’s free) for anyone having the hardware-accelerated Dell PDA’s.
Pros
- broad platform compliance from Pocket PC 2002 to WM5 (runs flawlessly even on my iPAQ 3660 - except, of course, for the multiple buttonpress problem)
- you can’t go wrong with classical in-game music :)
- a lot of power-ups as opposed to Metalion 2 and Solterra
- (- as with so many other games, incompatible with WM5-upgraded HP iPAQ hx4700)
- no autofire and/or no touchscreen control support to ease the life of Pocket PC owners with hardware buttons not supporting multiple button presses (for example, iPAQ 36xx/37xx owners) or devices that have double-press support on by default (for example, the Pocket Loox 718/720 – see this article for more info.)
- no Intel 2700G support (unlike with Solterra)
- while it’s working great on VGA devices, it’s quite pixelizated
