An Almost Flawless Wolfeinstein 3D/Spears of Destiny Port Is Out

Back in 1992, one of my favourite games was Wolfeinstein 3D. I remember playing it the entire night in a computer party on a then very expensive, stereo Sound Blaster Pro and a 10 MHz IBM 286 AT and loved the stereo sounds. Now, pocketinsanity, also author of several other, killer titles like PocketUAE, has come up with a greatly upgraded, almost seamless port of the game. It doesn't really have issues and, playability-wise, is almost as good as the original, even on VGA devices (I've tested it on a WM2003SE VGA F-S Pocket Loox 720, in addition to the WM2003 HP iPAQ 2210). The only real problem with the game is the sound. As is easy to guess, the Pocket PC doesn't have an FM synthenizer chip, unlike Adlibs (and, therefore, Sound Blasters), the de facto FM synthenizer sound standard set back in 1989 . Therefore, the emulated music is definitely worse (for example, more bandwidth-limited) than on a genuine PC with FM synthetization support. Additionally, the digitized sounds aren't very good – they all have some latency. They are in stereo, however, so, you know in which direction you are shot from. Nevertlehess, sound problems aside, it's still a great port. You can download the game from here. Please note that the installer EXE didn't work for me for some reason; therefore, I had to resort to the CAB distribution file. If you also run into problems, get the CAB file.- Login or Register to post comments
