Q: How can I remote control my desktop Windows 2k Server/XP Pro/Win 2k3 from my PPC? A: first of all, I recommend Terminal Services Client (TSC) because it's 1, already built-in in Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server 2, astonishingly good and efficient, even over super-slow GPRS connections. It's very easy to start the service on your desktop computer. On it, go to Settings/Control Panel/System/Remote and enable Allow users to remotely connect to this computer (see red arrow): click for screenshot If you want to connect to as a non-admin user, you must add these users by clicking Select Remote Users; if an admin login is OK, this may be neglected. Click Apply and OK. From then, you'll be able to use TSC on the PDA. Just click the Terminal Services Client icon on your PDA (if you can't find it, it's \Windows\mstsc.lnk; on 16 Mbyte ROM PPC2k2 devices like the iPAQ 36xx series, you have to install it in ROM from the upgrade CD; it can be found in \MS\APPS\TSclient\TerminalServerClientforPocketPC.exe there), fill in the IP address of the Windows desktop you'd like to connect to and click Connect. After this, you'll be greeted with the usual login screen – just fill it in and you're inside. Note that this all will only work on Windows 2k Server/XP Pro/W 2k3 – not on previous Windows versions or other operating systems. For accessing them, use, for example, the industry-standard VNC. With VNC, you'll even be able to control other handheld devices – even Pocket PCs Some additional links for more info on, for example, reducing the bandwidth needed : The official MS tutorial Tuning Windows XP Remote Desktop for Network Bandwidth Remote Desktop Web Connection – you won't directly need this; still, good to know Use your Pocket PC for remote troubleshooting- Login or Register to post comments
