How do I fix errors on my storage cards?

Q: What tool should I use on my PPC to fix storage card errors? Pocket Mechanic? Storage Tools? A: None of them. Avoid them at any rate! They are very likely to cause more problems than before. In a word: don't use anything PPC-based! (Note that I haven't used CNetX Flash Format, unlike the two above utilities, to try to correct the common "files are not closed" NoteM error - my standard test to test this stuff. It may work - or not.) As far as PC-based recovery tools are concerned, there're several choices: - use the free chkdsk utility (as described in the linked thread) in the simplest cases (for example, NoteM's not closing the recorded file, leaving a seemingly 0-byte-long file behind. It has also been successfully tested with the MamboX p353 photo tank, which, sometimes, stores files read from the storage card with the same filename in the same directory). - alternatively, use the free PC Inspector File Recovery. I haven't tested it yet in the above-mentioned cases. It has very good reviews/feedback - see for example this thread. - use GetDataBack for FAT in more serious cases. It has restored tons of seemingly totally lost files from damaged HDD's in my practice. Really recommended - but can be an overkill for "simple" cases outlined above - finally, the most pricey solution is one of the Ontrack EasyRecovery family. It's really expensive (129-329 UK Pounds for the Professional version licenses + VAT). The trial version only allows for viewing files that could be recovered (and recover ZIP files). I haven't ever needed to use it as yet - chkdsk and GetDataBack have always worked for me in all data resuce situations.
