New version of best Midlet manager released!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286857

Do you want to run the excellent, small applications called 'midlets' on your Pocket PC phone? Do you want to use the great, free, superfast alternative web browser Opera Mini and Google Maps on your phone? The excellent folks over at XDA-Dev (hands down the most lively Pocket PC Phone Edition forum on the Web) have just released a new version of the best Midlet manager for Pocket PC Phone Edition devices, Intent Midlet Manager version 11.1.7.1023 build 20060907. The latter means it's about a year newer than the Intent Midlet Manager version that has come with most of the Pocket PC phones and is really worth upgrading to. For example, it already supports WM5 softkeys (which were still missing from earlier versions); it has no problems with Google Maps either. It's available here (xda [at] ftp [dot] xda-developers [dot] com/Wizard/Misc/Risidoro_Intent_MIDlet_Manager_v11.zip">direct link to the ZIP file). All you need to do is uncompressing the CAB file from the archive, transfer it to your Pocket PC phone and just tap it to be installed. Note that you need to install it in the main storage and it will NOT work on non-Phone Edition devices. That is, don't even try to install it on, say, a Dell Axim x51v - it just won't work. I've thoroughly tested it on my HTC Universal and found it excellent.

Thank the pope. At last a midlet manager that works.

Thank You. Finally A MIDlet Manager that works excellent.

tnx

I have a Hp hw6515 running Windows Mobile 2003 2nd ED, the app doesnt work, it gives me the error: "'jmm' is not a valid Pocket PC application"(aftere the installation it gave the error: "The program you have installed may not display properly because it was designed for a pervious version of Windows Mobile software"). Is there any way of fixing this?

Terence, sure there is! Get for example THIS CAB file. It should work on your device (the linked CAB file is WM5+ only).

it doesnt work!!!!

Thanks for your "THIS" CAB file.
That file is for non-phone edition devices, isn't it?
No matter what, It just works on the emulator, thank you again!!!
By the way, do you have the newest Midlet Manager for Dopod Smartphone?

Werner Ruotsalainen's picture

"Visitor", Terence and Encin: there is a brand new tutorial, with links to non-Phone Edition versions as well, at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1479183&postcount=13.

This will also be part of my forthcoming MIDlet Bible.

Thank you, I've read it.
Seems smartphone can only run Midlet Manager of 10.1 series.

I have Toshiba E800 running Windows Mobile 2003 (yes, I'm a dinosaur). Will any version of the TAO Intent run on my OS? If so which version?
Thanks for your insightful articles!

Michael, try THIS. Note that the download link will only be available after 2-3 days (4pda.ru is experiencing technical difficulties); I'll also post a mirror link at least to the main chart of my forthcoming MIDlet Bible when it's available again (now, I don't have a local copy; this is why I can't mirror it either.)

Thanks for the rapid response. Glad to know it's possible. The
link access difficulties remain ->
Warning: require(./sources/misc/attach.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /data/pda-main-www/forum/index.php on line 463

I asked for help and you responded. Here's the update. Got TAO Intent loaded to my Windows Mobile 2003 device (main memory) and it works fine. Successfully installed Opera Mini also, though it tires not of asking for connection permission. Glad to have the app though. Downloaded Mobile GMaps and it appears to work, thus far. I first consulted your "Java Midlets on the PPC - Complete Tutorial" which proved very helpful. So there, a happy story! Looking forward to the Midlet Bible!

Hello Werner.
Im also using Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Ed on an Audiovox ppc6600 -an old relic, but I still luv it :)
I'm trying to install a Midlet Manager but I couldn't using the first link above. I got the same error "'jmm' is not a valid Pocket PC application"...)

After downloading the two mods you did for others I got a different error "Tao JVM is not a valid Windows CE Setup file"

Please let me know what I'm doing wrong. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated..

Greg, are you sure you downloaded the right version? It's only the older 10.x series that is (still) compatible with WM2003(SE), not the newer 11.x. That is, you'll need THIS file.

(BTW, in the meantime, I've publised the MIDlet Bible; I've also linked in these old files from its chart.)

Hello Werner.

I downloaded "THIS" as advised, and IT WORKS! Thank you so much Werner for your help. You're a blessing..

Hi Werner,

I hope this note finds you in good health and spirits.

Okay, I carefully read the great Midlet Bible, but it could not save me in this instance. I tried, without success, many combinations of the Opera Mini Beta 4 shortcut example provided in the main table.

What would be the correct shortcut to open both Manager and Opera Mini 4 midlet in the following scenario?

My Midlet Manager/Opera Mini Directory:
\Program Files\TAO\JMM\app\jam\midlets\operaamini\

operaamini (yes, that’s the spelling shown) Directory contains:
.rms - file folder
? - JAD fileclass
.per - per file
? - zipped file
i - png image

Both Intent Midlet Manager and Opera Mini 4(final) work when sequentially invoked in the longer manual fashion. The icon in the Midlet Manager is labelled "Opera Mini".

Thanks for your guidance.

Werner Ruotsalainen's picture

Michael, it should be

199#"\Program Files\TAO\Jmm.exe" -r"Opera Mini","Opera Software ASA","Opera Mini"

Let me know if it doesn't work.

I've also uploaded the link file HERE (the storage card version is HERE).

Hi Werner,

Your quick response is appreciated. I did carefully try that shortcut before and just now. It returns the error " Cannot find JMM or one of its components. Make sure the path and filename are correct and the required libraries are available".

I have also unsuccessfully tried the absolute paths for both the Midlet Manager and Opera Mini in the same shortcut.

A solution to this is desirable, but not essential. I am happy that I could even use Java midlets on my Tosh E800 oldie to begin with. Wanna guess who read the button enhancer bible and now full screens Opera in TAO? Sweet!

Thanks.

Did you also try the first LNK file I've provided?

(BTW, where's your jmm.exe located at?)

Hi Werner,

Yes, I tried your LNK file without success: it returns the same path/libraries error.

My Midlet Manager/Opera Mini Directory is:
\Program Files\TAO\JMM\app\jam\midlets\operaamini\

My jmm.exe (it's shown in lowercase) is located at " \Program Files\TAO\JMM\jmm.exe"

operaamini (yes, that’s the spelling shown) Directory contains:
.rms - file folder
? - JAD fileclass
.per - per file
? - zipped file
i - png image

Both Intent Midlet Manager and Opera Mini 4(final) work when sequentially invoked in the longer manual fashion. The icon in the Midlet Manager is labelled "Opera Mini".

Hi Werner,

Need to resource your brain, again. To start, yes, I read your Midlet Bible!

My Question: when running Opera Mini 4 final in "forced" fulscreen mode, how can one navigate backwards when paging through a site? I am using a keyboardless PPC running WM2003FE and TAO Intent MM. Fullscreen "**" is invoked through button mapping and one of your sample MortSrcipts.

In the Midlet Bible, the Main Chart indicates a way to force page forward but not page back. Is this possible? If so, how can I accomplish this objective?

Note: I am tech savvy(?)but not a software programmer.

Thanks.

Werner Ruotsalainen's picture

Michael, unfortunately, there's no back shortcut except for the right softkey (which isn't available under pre-WM5) and, on Smartphones only, the Back hardware key.

However, to avoid having to use the touchscreen (a quick switch back to non-full screen mode & tapping the right softkey), you could try creating a MortScript script issuing the #5 sentence. Then, you only need to press DOWN and Action. (Unfortunately, the latter two can't be issued from MortScript, as it doesn't support button scancodes).

Hi Werner,

Thanks for the insight. In attempting to use many software apps, I frequenty shake my head in puzzlement, why does the obvious go undetected so often? Related Examples: Not every end user device has the same hardware configuration; To navigate one often needs to go forward, up, down, and back; An open app needs a non-convoluted method to close/exit; and so on.

Oh well, this is technological reality: doubious compromises and halfway solutions.

Werner Ruotsalainen's paths worked like a charm! (I created it manually).

Thanks!

Hi there... Having a small problem with getting the midlet manager to connect. I found this page because both my IMate SP3i and SP5 came with the TAO Midlet Manager, and I've just upgraded an old O2 XDA (the original one...) to WM2003.

Manager installed without a problem, runs and installs java midlets without a problem. The only thing is, it won't allow any midlets to connect to the internet at all... I've tried MXit, Morange, and Opera Mini. No luck...

I noticed in the settings, you can choose a 'Network Type', whicj lists all my connections. I've tried all of them, with ending the manager and starting it again after changing each time, still will not let ANY midlets connect. Anyone got any ideas?

Andre, sorry, I shoudl have flagged this article as deprecated - currently, Jbed is the most recommended MIDlet manager for WM. It's available for download HERE and is thoroughly explained in the currently published MIDlet Bible.

Hi Werner

thank u its realy works.

I have got a magicain with 2003 SE. Which version of the Midlet Manager allow my midlets to send SMS.
Right now, I have tried a few 10.1 series cabs, and nothing happens when I try to send the SMS.

Werner Ruotsalainen's picture

KK, give a try to the "hacked", WM2003SE PE-complian Jbed version linked to from HERE.

hey, thanks, it works
but how do i get that thing in english?
Also, could yo tell me as to why it wasnt working with TAO? Is it that the TAO MM doesnt support sms sending?

Werner Ruotsalainen's picture

KK, great to hear it works. Play with the MUI (language / resource) files - over at XDA-Devs (in my MIDlet Bible thread), someone has managed to do it. If you don't succeed, tell me, and when I have some time, I check it myself and publish how it needs to be done.

I found a solution for this.
Go to Program Files/JBed3dMod
There are 3 files :
JBed (the exec)
jbed.exe.0409
jbed.exe.0409_eng

rename the jbed.exe.0409 to something like jbed.exe.0409_ru
rename the jbed.exe.0409_eng to jbed.exe.0409

Thats all - now start the app!
