Q: Is there call answering machine software for the Pocket PC? A: Nope.

UPDATE (01/09/2008): the first real answering machine software has been released; see THIS.
(end of update)

Many would really welcome a local answering machine on their Pocket PC’s to, for example, avoid the (often costly) need to call in remote voicemail boxes and/or to keep / archive the recordings of their, say, girlfriend.

Unfortunately, I have bad news for all these people: there is NO way one can implement such software on the current (mostly HTC-manufactured) crop of Pocket PC Phone Edition devices because of the hardware limitations I’ve explained in my article on recording conversations. That is, it’s pretty futile to look for any answering machine software for your Pocket PC phone – unless you have the GIGABYTE G-Smart (see below).

Note that

  1. there are SMS notifiers (Aali Alikoski’s free SMS Notifier and BOO! Interactive’s commercial SMS Answering Machine) but they only answer with an SMS message and aren’t able to directly record the speech (the message) of the caller
  2. other smart phone platforms (see for example Smart Answer on the Nokia S60 platform) do have call recorders. They, however, have hardware that does allow recording calls. (HTC, hear this?! It has been stated many times and we’ll tell you many MORE times that you SHOULD produce phone models that are able to record phone calls because that feature would also make it possible to use the phone as an answering machine!)
  3. there is only one Pocket PC Phone Edition model, GIGABYTE’s excellent G-Smart, which contains built-in software to do this. The software, however, can NOT be “hacked” to other devices – this GIGABYTE PDA has special hardware that, unlike HTC models, does allow for recording the voice of the other party (incidentally, this is why it also contains a call recorder software, not just a call answering machine.)

I highly recommend this thread for more info.

You can't have any answering machine for the reasons outlined above. Sorry.

Or try an O2 Stealth with a built in "virtual" answering machine. Records incoming calls to the device. Really annoys your service provider. No more wasting minutes checking voicemail.

You are wrong. I can recording incoming/outgoing phone conversation on imate sp5m.

It's just tough to do so. I add this comment because you claim this is impossible wherever you can :)

Everyhting is possible=i'mpossible

Thanks for the comment;

in the linked article (the one on conversation recording) I've listed the MS Smartphones that are capable of flawless call recording. The list also contains the HTC Tornado - that is, the i-mate sp5m.

HI
can i record a call by my i-mate sp3 tayphone

regards

To my knowledge, yes. I haven't tested it myself though.

do u have any call recorder for windows mobile 2003se ...

Regards

Hi,
Is it possible to receive the call on mobile directly thr' your desktop ?? Is this facility available with any software/PC connectivity suite??

Hi
Nothing is imposible!
I can record all incoming voice by resco audio recorder.

the caller can hear playing audio during convertion ( ex: auto fligt bill voice)

mix of above program can be a call convertion recorder! but none of coder have enough idea to start!
hehe

"lovely pocket pc", what model do you have? Some Smartphone (for example, the s310) and (very) few Pocket PC (for example, the O2 Atom Exec, the HTC Advantage / 7500 etc.) models do allow for seamless (!) recording. The rest don't.

Gentlemen, what about HTC TYTN II? Is there a chance i could make it work as an answering machine when i can't take the call? This is important for me. Thanks in advance

Evgeny, I have bad news for you: the Kaiser doesn't support call recording either. See for example THIS.

Werner, thank you for the answer although it is not the one i was hoping to get. Cheers))

Is there any answering machine program compatible with i-mate JAQ?
I really nead to have answering on my device...

The first answering machine for WM5 (work not on all commucators).

hi, the iSecretary is very nice and works too. if u combine it with Audionotes, u can get speaker for better sound quality.

i just wanted to know how to register this program.

There is already a script for answering machine using SK Schema that works just fine
U can play back your wav file (on some machines set the dealy to 3 secs after receiving phone call in parameters) and then use Resco audio recorder which to me seems to record much better from the earpiece than the vito stuff on my Imate Jam wm2003SE and the quality is more than acceptable to me.

Hopefully the nice guys puts both these functions together for us.

Enraged, thanks for pointing this out - I'll update the original article.

I have HTC Kaiser device.I am running a small application where i am sending a DTMF Tone when the call is in active state. Is sending of the DTMF tone to the called party possible during the active call in case of the HTC kaiser devices.

If Yes please let me know.

HI:  I have HTC Touch

HI:  I have HTC Touch Cruise with iSecretary 4.6 installed.  Wow does it work?  It really doesn´t playback my welcome message.  It just answers the caller phonecall and let him hear what microphone catches, but not my recorded message (!?)  ¿Is there something wrong?   Thanks in advance.  Paco
