Q: The Pocket PC RealOne Player installer tells me (click here for screenshot) to reinstall ActiveSync. This is utterly strange because it's already installed... A: The installer of RealOne Player, the currently only Pocket PC application to play RealMedia files and streamed RealOne multimedia contents, uses several install-time licensing DLL's which don't start (it just shows the above-mentioned error message, instead of the standard "I'll automatically install the app as soon as you reconnect your PDA" way of how ActiveSync works) when there's no Pocket PC connected to the desktop PC you run the installer on. (This is what I really dislike in custom Pocket PC installers and am against any kind of custom, non-AS-based installers.) Therefore, you must connect your PDA to the desktop computer in order to make it work, unlike with "standard" programs that have pre-ActiveSync-time connection testing. If you (still) have problems doing (after having done) this, you can access the CAB file, realplayer.cab, which you need to transfer to the PDA and click it (or install it with some more advanced tools like CabInstl or Mad Programmer's File Dialog Changer – please read this blog entry on this), can be found in the temporary directory c:\Documents and Settings\Windows username\Local Settings\Temp\~rnsetup\ (where the trailing 'p' may change to 0, 1 etc... upon subsequent, non-deleted installs). Note that these files will only exist after you start the installer, RealOne Player.exe, but before you close the error dialog. Incidentally, if you would like to know how you can play streamed (online) content with the RealOne Player (another common problem with this application), check out this blog entry.- Login or Register to post comments
