Which (current) Pocket PC's (have) receive(d) the WM5 upgrade?
While opinions differ on whether it's really worth upgrading to it (my personal opinion is that, much as, as opposed to the PPC2k2-to-WM2003 switch back in 2003, it won't deliver (much of) a performance increase, it will be worth upgrading as soon as all the third-party software incompatibilities are ironed out), Windows Mobile 5 has one thing in common: everyone wants to know whether his or her particular PDA model can be upgraded to it.
As the WM5 upgrade area is always changing (PDA manufacturers are cancelling upgrades or releasing ones that, bug/stability-wise, shouldn't be released), I've decided to compile an up-to-date report of the current situation.
The following models have already received the upgrade:
- the Dell Axim x50 series. (Note that the current version of the upgrade is, to put it mildly, not the best. See for example Tari Akpodiete's excellent blog entry on this and for future links). However, knowing Dell's constantly releasing fixes and updates, I'm pretty sure these bugs will be ironed out in the near future.
- the iPAQ hx2xxx series. Much fewer problems are related to this upgrade than that of the above-mentioned Dell Axim x50 upgrades. Please see the iPAQ HQ hx2xxx forum and, for example, this thread for more information.
- two HTC PDA-phone combos, the Blue Angel (XDA III, MDA III, Qtek 9090, PDA2K) (see this) and the Himalaya (XDA II, MDA II, Qtek 2020) (see this and this). (Note that the following, also recent (WM2003SE) HTC models have no way of WM5 upgrades: Alpine (XDA IIi) (see this), Magician (i-Mate JAM, MDA Compact) (see this) and, of course, the old Wallaby (O2 XDA, T-Mobile MDA, Qtek1010, Siemens SX-56)).
Upgrades not released yet:
The iPAQ hx4700 is said to also receive the WM5 upgrade, but only next Spring and, taking into account the problems with WM5 upgrades in general, I wouldn't be absolutely sure it'll indeed come.
The case of the, according to many (including me) current highest-end non-combo Pocket PC, the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 718/720 doesn't seem to receive the upgrade, but this may still change.
Upgrades that most definitely won't ever be released:
Unfortunately, no other current WM2003SE devices will receive the WM5 upgrade, not even the VGA Asus a730(w) and the Toshiba e830, let alone current WM2003SE QVGA devices.
