Free eBooks, TV Listings, and Movies

A few freebies have come along lately that I thought I'd
pass your way, including old movies, TV listings, and
fiction eBooks.

Fictionwise Offers Free eBooks

Fictionwise
has arranged with its publishers to make a selection of
about 20 eBooks available for free this fall. But they say
it's a time-limited offer, so stop in soon.

The categories include science fiction,
suspense/thriller, mystery, romance, fantasy, and humor. The
eBooks are available for download in a wide variety of
formats, including LIT for Microsoft Reader. You need to
register to download, but it's quick and free to do so.

TV Listings

A couple
of years ago we covered two applications for
putting TV schedules on your device. When TV Guide
stopped making its listings available to these applications,
problems ensued. But then the developers found an alternate
source of data.

A recent posting in the Pocket PC Newsgroup by Shawn Hale

recommends both the free Pocket
TV Listings
and Pocket
TV Browser
, which costs $10 per year (free trial
available).

He says that both involve setting up channels on a web page.
The information is downloaded automatically, requiring you to leave the programs
running minimized on your PC. The schedules are then transferred to your Pocket
PC either automatically when your device is connected to your PC (with Pocket TV Browser),
or through ActiveSync (with Pocket TV Listings).

He prefers Pocket TV Listings because it shows programs
in a grid format with times and channels. Pocket TV Browser
displays programs and channels in a list fashion. He says
both can be customized, are easy to install, and can
download the data onto a storage card.

Old Movies for Free

Portable
Media Center Movies
has a small selection of old movies
converted for ready transfer to Portable Media Center
devices and to Pocket PC devices with 320x240 resolution.
(Note that downloading of these movies requires a BitTorrent
peer-to-peer application.)

If you know of other great online resources, I invite you
to post in our "What's
Happening on the Web
" forum.
