Mobile.Answers.com, Freebies
I’ve been writing about the Internet for years, but for some reason hadn’t heard of Answers.com until recently. This week we’ll take a brief look at Mobile.Answers.com, plus some of the latest freebies.
Mobile.Answers.com
According to the web site, Answers.com provides information on over a million topics. The site has licensed references works from publishers such as Houghton Mifflin, Columbia University Press, and Merriam Webster, and draws on resources such as the Computer Desktop Encyclopedia, MarketWatch, Investopedia, Who2, and Wikipedia. If you type in a search term, you’ll typically get a dictionary definition and/or encyclopedia entries, as well as cross-referencing.
Answers.com was recently made available as a mobile site at Mobile.Answers.com, and is another valuable mobile resource if you access the Internet via your device.
Free Game from Clickgamer
Clickgamer recently announced its newest game, "High Noon Drifter — Dead Man's Gulch," as a free download. This new game is a first-person "Old West Shoot 'em Up" adventure. It’s available for all devices based on the Windows Mobile Pocket PC platform, and according to the press release, “is the highest quality PDA game ever offered for free.” This freebie is in celebration of the complete redesign
of the company’s two Web sites, www.clickgamer.com and www.clickapps.com.
New Version of Skype
I’m just in the process of setting up a wireless network at home and am looking forward to trying Skype on my Pocket PC. A new version of this free software for free Internet telephony was recently released that includes fixes and new features such as the ability to leave Skype voicemail, SkypeIn support, a centralized contact list, VGA support, and support for additional languages.
Free Pocket PC Manual
She goes by the name of Season BubbleGirl, and she’s written a Pocket PC manual that you can download for free. It’s in
RTF format, with an accompanying HTML file of links. After a quick glance, I’d say this is most useful to novices or even to someone considering purchasing a Pocket PC. It gives quite a broad overview.
Skweezer Contest Results
The winners of last week’s three free Skweezer Pro accounts are Louis L. Oumar, and Robert T, selected at random. Thanks to all of you who sent along nice comments about Skweezer (which I passed along to Greenlight Wireless) and about my column and Pocket PC magazine (all of which I passed along to Pocket PC magazine publisher Hal Goldstein).
Some of you wrote, “I hope I win the contest. I’d really like to try Skweezer” — seemingly not realizing there’s a free version. (The main difference is that the Pro version removes the ad at the top.)
If you know of other great online resources, I invite you to post in our "What's Happening on the Web" forum or to contact me at jim_karpen [at] pocketpcmag [dot] com.
