Hans, as far as high-end devices are concerned, you may want to check out the latest N560/C550 by Fujitsu-Siemens. I've used them for a while and was absolutely pleased - their screen is even better than that of the hx4700 (smaller size aside).

Chris, could you provide me with the e-mail address (even in a private e-mail) of the HP rep that asked for the source of the update? I could send it to him right away.

UPDATE: it won't be necessary - I've been contacted by HP in the meantime.

yukon_28, please be patient. I'm absolutely sure we can clear up the legality/distribution issues of the driver in 1-2 days. Before that, I may not distribute anything without permission.

It's a stand-alone, version 1.01 PCMCIA driver update:

Thanks for the info, Chris. I've been sent the patch by a Brighthand forum member - that is, some other people have managed to talk to some people at HP that did know of the patch.

I haven't received any answer to my mail to HP so far; I still hope they will answer my questions. (Strange you got prompt answers.)

"Right now there is not yet a software or firmware patch to your problem. However there is a temporary fix.

Tap start-> settings-> systems tab and open Power.
Tap the Advanced tab, set the "On Battery Power" to 5 minutes.
Tap "Adjust Backlight", and set the time to 3 minutes."

I'm pretty sure this will NOT fix the problem.

The case/patch number is 11903; the CAB file is named P11903_CF_initialize[1].sa.CAB .

Feel free to send the link to this blog post to the HP folks.

I may not distribute the patch as I'm not sure it's publicly distributable. However, I let you know all when HP contacts me back about the availability of the patch.
