Over at PPCT, I've been asked whether PIEPlus 2.1b2 runs off a storage card (to save up 600k built-in storage memory, which is of extreme importance with non-native WM5 devices like the Dell Axim x50 and the iPAQ hx4700). The answer is yes - it's working great off storage cards.

Indeed there're several great browsers and plug-ins. The rule of thumb is as follows:

- if you can put up with PIE's problems (slow loading speed, pretty bad JavaScript compliance) and/or need its advanced stuff not (yet?) available (or, if they are available, at a much worse level - see for example the Flash bugs in NetFront 3.2 / 3.3), then, get a decent PIE plug-in. Right now, I'd recommend PIEPlus 2.1b2 (I'll publish my MultiIE 4 review in an hour; in it, I describe the problems with it)

- if you need the great speed, VGA-friendliness and the superior JavaScript compliance of Opera Mobile (on the expense of (currently) not being able to display Java / Flash), go for Opera Mobile.

(Now that there are worthy alternatives AND I've found a lot of additional NetFront 3.3 bugs in the meantime, I don't recommend NetFront any more.)

That is, the decision depends on whether you need a very fast, VGA-friendly browser (Opera Mobile) or absolutely need Java and Flash support, would prefer a way to save Web pages/images without having to browse the Opera cache and can live with the "speed" and pretty bad rendering / JavaScript engine of PIE.

This is, of course, only the surface of this question - but will be sufficient for a start.

Now that a new version of every major browser and PIE plug-in has hit the market, I'll publish a much more thorought explanation of all these questions. Dunno when (I'd prefer writing it in the next week) - I may still wait for the MultiIE 4 bugs to be fixed so that I can review a really working and reliable version in the roundup.
