Thanks Juhani!

Without giving it a try myself in the Phone app, it indeed seems WM5 PE does need some time to load the (used) instruments from the file system into the memory (this is why there is a considerable pause before WMP10 plays individual midi files too). This may be the reason for the delays.

I remember the desktop EVB EXE having a problem with WM 5.0. Not the actual EVB runtime itself. Though MS does not support EVB on WM 5.0 it does run. Try extracting the CAB file from the EXE and copy to the WM 5.0 device and then run.

Good luck.

yes, the latest VB version does work on WM5. Otherwise, I couldn't have run PocketMidi/AMP on my WM5 devices. Tested this on my 4 different WM5 devices.

It is just that it MUST be installed in the built-in storage, NOT a card.

PAS... yup, and the other AdLib / SB clones.

I bought my first (version 1.5) Sound Blaster in late 1990, when it costed about ~$300, half of the price of an Amiga 500. And, it was barely comparable to an Amiga - not only hardware, but also software support-wise. It was only later (late 1991) that programs / games really started to use the 8-bit DA (for example, the speech add-on of Wing Commander II); up until that, we only had (noisy) FM synthezis.

Boy, Adlib and Sound Blasters.
That brings back memories. Pro Audio Spectrum card was a popular PC audio card too. LOL

All of them use wavetable synthesis - I think even Mimidi 0.98 (which has the worst instrument set - it's still better than FM synthesis).

Without wavetable synthesis, they would sound much worse and much more "digital". Remember, for example, the FM synthesised midi of AdLib / non-wavetable-based Sound Blasters?

Hi Werner:

Were you able to notice if any of the MIDI players for the Pocket PC used what's called "wavetable synthesis"?

This is basically your standard 128 General Midi sounds sampled and stored within a file.

This would be in my opinion the best form of Midi playback as far as sound quality goes from a software standpoint.

If anyone remembers the MPort MIDI interface for the Pocket PC that was my creation many moons ago. ;-)
