POP3 should consume less bandwidth.

MS has promised to fix the problem in WM6; dunno if they have indeed done it.

Try using IMAP IDLE if bandwidth usage is a big issue - it'll keep your data bill down.

2. unfortunately, no - unlike with HTTP (the protocol of the Web), with IMAP, it's not possible to use (textual) proxies, which could make it possible to get rid of the uneeeded traffic (if possible).

Microsoft is, however, now aware of the problem and may fix these issue in the future.

FlexMail's IMAP IDLE consumes less bandwidth, particularly if you have many old mails in your mailboxes - and, in addition, it promptly notifies you of new mail.

Yup, you're right about what the RFC advises ("MAY" vs. "MUST"). However, even then, the bandwidth usage is close to zero (as the client only needs to issue the (untagged) command "DONE", and, then, the (tagged) "IDLE", every, say, 29 minutes. It's still far away from the 309-byte / 15 minutes heartbeat used with Push Mail.
