Just ordered a 4705

I just ordered a 4705 from Comp-USA, they matched the Costco price of 579. That I thought was a good deal and I got the 99. No questions replacement warranty.

I have some questions and a request for any suggestions from other forum members on any accessories that I might find useful, as well as any suggestions on software that I should buy or consider buying. I thought it would be better to ask other forum members their ideas rather than learning the hard way. So thank you in advance for your suggestions as well as tolerating my being long winded.

I travel the South East visiting HVAC contractors and doing demo's or training at their customers homes, I'm on the road 20+ days a month. I have a HP ZV5000Z notebook (with wireless b/g & Bluetooth) and Cingular Cell service (Nokia 6200) I know I need to get a Bluetooth phone but I'm not sure which one to get yet.

I have a BAD case of ADD so I tend to forget things and I'll write notes on paper and loose them much of the time.

I thought with a PPC I might be able to better keep my life in order. I.E. Keep track of things, appointments, contacts, notes, Travel expenses and mileage etc. I was going to use a GPS with my PPC but I now have a Honda Odyssey with Nav. so that is not an issue anymore.

Some basic issues that I know I need to address right away:

What Case should I use, The sales person suggested a Rhino Skin aluminum case. I was concerned that it might scratch the PPC. I plan on always having the PPC with me work or with family so an all around case would be best.

Do I need to get the extended HP 3600 MAh battery?

I have 3 video's that I show customers they are 55mb, 51mb and 90mb windows media video files, it would be nice if I could show them on my PPC but its not required.

I also have a spreadsheet that is about 44k in size it is 10 cells wide (a-j) by 181 cells long that I use regularly with my customers.

Is it better to use Compact Flash or SD for expanding my memory? Staples has Lexar 1GB CF 4x memory for $59 or Lexar 1GB SD memory for $59. also. Which is better to use and what does the 4x mean? They had 12x CF 512mb for $79., Amazon has Lexar 80x 1GB CF memory too, so I'm lost as to which to use and what are the advantages / disadvantages?

Thank you again for all of your advice and suggestions.

If you guys are looking at those expensive cases, there are some really nice alternatives. I have been using a little leather one with pouches for 3 credit cards and two SD memory chips as well as a bigger pouch for stuff like recipts. Its got a swivel belt clip and fits my iPAQ 3850 (now deceased) perfectly. The best part is that I picked it up at CompUSA for like $20- 25 buckaroonies. It does what I need perfectly. Regarding memory, as long as your internal is 64 megs, you shouldn't need to upgrade, especially for what you want to do. I would just say put all of your movies and such on a huge gig or more IBM microdrive CF card and all of your applications on the SD. I used the trifold iPAQ keyboard that clips right into the base of the ipaq, which works very nice, but if you can get a bluetooth to work seamlessly, I say go for it.

I have had a 4705 for about 2 months now. I use the Think Outside the Box bluetooth keyboard from mobile planet and like it a lot and can reccomend it.

As far as the memory item you asked about - to my mind there is no problem with the built in memory. I got by with a whole lot less when I had a 1945. Some people just want more. It is a process that voids the warrenty so especially in your case where you bought the extra warrenty I wouldn't do it.

As far as a case is concerned I'm still looking for one myself. The ones I like are either too expensive (over $100.00) or still not availabe.

One program that I had on my 1945 and carried over to my 4705 is "Pocket Earth". It gives the time and other data on cities all around the planet. Lets you zoom in and out and shows day and night views of the place you are looking.

I also use a 512 MB SD card with no problems.

Good luck,

Seaweed

Thanks for the suggestions so far, any thoughts on a case? is the leather type better than the metal? and is one type/brand of case better than another?

Also I read somewhere else that somone was having their memory upgraded? Does this have a RAM memory problem ie not enought?

Thanks again,

Ray

I've forgotten to answer this:

"I also have a spreadsheet that is about 44k in size it is 10 cells wide (a-j) by 181 cells long that I use regularly with my customers."

The PPC has built-in Pocket Excel (or, if it doesn't work, you can get third-party solutions), so you won't have problems at showing your XLS files either.

I don't think so - the hx4700 has a decent battery life, clearly the best among the VGA devices.

The iPAQ has the PWMP9 pre-installed, so you can show everything. You may want to convert them into AVI to be able to play them in BetaPlayer, however, because it's vastly superior to PWMP.

As a rule of thumb: CF and SD memories offer almost the same speed in recent PDA's, with SD cards being slightly faster. The meaning of 4x means that they are 4-speed cards. You should pay little attention to this value if you don't want to write to these cards often in a desktop card reader / in a non-low-end digicam because PDA's are very slow at accessing memory cards. There won't really be difference at accessing a, say, 4x card and a 80x card in your PDA.

If, however, you want to always write to the card hundreds of megabytes in a desktop-based, USB2 card reader, you should buy a very fast card so that the writing process can be done quickly. The same stands for any recent, fast digicam (Canons etc., but NOT any of the HP cameras or low-end Nikon ones!) - if you also want to use your card with them, get the fastest card possible.
