Hi, I was wondering, I got an ipaq 2210 and I am very happy with it. Giving the fact that there will be a newer OS released this year I would like to know if it possible to upgrade my ipaq by that time with the new OS mobile 2005? Anybody an idea?

I was adding it up the other day, I have over $4,000 in computer equipment from HP, which is a lot for a high school student, and maybe $150 in all other brands of equipment that I use combined. I really don't want to have to abandon HP.

Caleb,
I agree with you.
I have recently sent out my 4700 to PPCTechs for upgrade. If HP ever offer the RAM upgrade for a reasonable price, I will go directly to them. But the only problem for that is in the UK the price is always add 17.5% of the VAT, making the price REALLY REALLY expensive.
Although I don't feel good about HP not releasing the proper OS upgrade, I have been happy (not all the time) with their products (not services, I never called them).
I have been using 3 iPAQs in the past 3 years, each has its strength/weaknesses.

That PDA would run Linux (see IBM's commitment to Linux), which, therefore, wouldn't sell very good. This is why the Linux-based Zaurus series, which indeed has a great hardware, isn't officially exported to outside of Japan. (However, interestingly, in Japan, the Zaurus SL series sells like hot cakes.)

I very much like HP, but I do have to agree that their customer support could be better. I really hope that my $650 hx 4705 can be upgraded, personally I would think that this go round it would make tons of sense to offer an upgrade, especially if they are the only ones. If they offer the upgrade, all of the people that hate them now will be tons happier, and that means more sales for hp, which translates to money. Also, if others don't release the upgrade but hp does, that means less money for hp's competitors, and even more for hp. I think that would make sense, wouldn't it?

HP fixed my iPAQ even though it got run over by a car. The screen was shattered and it was obvious that it had MAJOR physical damage. They sent me it fixed, it was not a new device. So 8ball, I have to disagree with you, they do fix devices. This is in my experience though, and I must admit once I was outside the warranty I was treated worse than toliet paper. As for the upgrades as much as I wanted the Windows Mobile 2003 SE I don't think that I will stop buying from HP because of one incident. That won't teach them anything. You also can't blame a company for not being able to talk to you one on one. I mean they are so extensive that it would be impossible to train everyone to handle every single problem. Personally critics should re-examine their arguement to how HP communicate better instead of, I hate HP they suck.

I guess I must be to only HAPPY person with HP. I have had my Ipaq 4155 for almost 1 1/2 years and I love it. As well as I ahve had to call support several times and each time they have been VERY helpfull. Although I will agree I learn more here in this forum than any place.

.... okay this is totally off topic, but what if IBM released a handheld line? IT would be a welcome step for Big Blue since their current CEO is having a field-day selling off the company bit by bit (i.e. selling the entire IBM laptop division to Levono, Corp.)
IBM has always had OUTSTANDING support for all of their products, esp. their thinkpad laptops, I am sure they would offer great support for PDAs as well.

I'm not a HP fanboy, and have always preferred buying from HP's competitors (so that I support them), but I need to admit that both Toshiba and Asus (and, for that matter, any other PPC manufacturer) have made the same mistake in the past as HP now:
- Toshi has never released the WM2003 upgrade for the very buggy e740 (however, it must also be pointed out that Toshi was the only PPC manufacturer that delivered the WM2003SE upgrade for their then-current device, the e80x series (but, unfortunately, not for the e750 series).)
- Asus: they have never released the WM2003SE upgrade for their (then) most recent device, the 716. The same stands for the Asus 600, their first PPC: WM2003 (which it would have really deserved - PPC2k2 runs awfully slow on XScale-equipped devices) was never released for it.
- Fujitsu-Siemens: it's one thing that they released the WM2003 upgrade for their Pocket Loox 600, but they have not released WM2003SE for (any of) the their then-current device(s) (PL610).
- Dell: much as they released WM2003 for the x5 series (which was a welcome move - the x5 with PPC2k2 was really slow, and the WM2003 upgrade did help a lot), WM2003SE for any of their then-current devices (the x3 series) was a no-go.
Hopefully, the recent firing of HP's CEO may mean something good.

This is absolutely UNCALLED FOR! I find it atrociously discusting how the OEMs are abandoning true customer support in order to fufill their greedy desires for more money. If I shell out 500+ dollars for a device, i would expect some level of customer support. Unfortuanately, tech support for any PPC maker is not support at all. If my PDA breaks it is always "send it in and we will send a replacment" I DON'T WANT A REPLACEMENT! I WANT IT FIXED! This is assuming they will even deal with you at all. Personally, this planned obsolecense does NOT make me come back to their company. I refuse to buy from a company that will not offer me the support we deserve. I would much rather buy from one of their competititors.
As a side note, I think that Asus and Toshiba have decent track records in this department, correct me if i'm wrong though.
Well, thats my 2 cents. 8ball out!

I think I can understand your frustration.
But this is the scam where all the pocket pc vendors making money. It's not just HP who does that, I believe.
Due to the amazing new features of the new OS and refusal of releasing upgrades (even for a fee), they are expecting the users to abandon the pocket pc and opt for a new one.
However, I think 2210 is one of the best value pocket pc and the provision of dual slot can add you a lot of potential expandability and you can be without a new OS for the next year or so, easy.
So anyway, good luck.

It's not really a question of ability, but, more of what they deem proper. There're quite knowledgeable people at HP - it's just that they don't (didn't?) want to release an operating system upgrade, not even for money. They surely would have been able to release them for all previous-generation (PXA255 devices with WM2003) models.

The ability of the hardware supplier to adapt on these kind of releases wil absolutly have an impact on my future choice of new PDA!
I am disapointed already, HP doesn´t do a good job then!

It's, unfortunately, highly unlikely - the 2210 didn't even receive the WM2003SE upgrade.

This will be completely up to HP. Each maker releases ROM updates for their models and it is up to each maker which (if any) of their models get updated. Based on past experience, though, don't hold your breath.
