Battery and Back Up

Hello again - I have two questions that I would appreciate help with please.

a) How do I back up everything that is on my SD card on to my PC without saving everything to the general memory on PPC (RZ1710 IPAQ)??

b) Is there anything I can carry that is portable to increase battery life? Something like a spare battery - or something that plugs in and will give me a few extra hours charge?

Regards

Fortunately, it's much easier than backing up your PDA's main memory. There're even free/cheap tools for doing this.

First, you don't even need a dedicated backup program to back up your card. A simple Total Commander (TC) with the WinCE FS plug-in will do. Because this combo is VERY useful in every respect (not just for backing up your SD card), I describe how you can install it on your desktop computer.

1, get the desktop TC installer fromhttp://www.ghisler.com/download.htm , install and run it

2, get the WinCE FS plug-in ZIP fromhttp://ghisler.fileburst.com/fsplugins/wincefs.zip and place it under some directory.

3, navigate with the cursor of TC to this ZIP and, when the cursor is over it, press Enter. You'll see something like the following:

(Note that I've only taken screenshots of the pane on left.)

4, Press OK three times.

5, now, click the drop-down drive list in TC:

(or, alternatively, press Alt-F1) and choose the lowermost "drive" marked with a \ mark.

6, from there, choose the uppermost drive, WinCE Device.

7, you're on your PDA's file system. You'll see something like this:

(Btw, if you don't want to do step 5 and 6 all the time, just press Ctrl-D when you're already here. Then, just click 'Add current dir', and, then, OK. From then, simply pressing Ctrl-D from anywhere and choosing "WinCE Device" will take you straight to this directory.)

8, put the cursor over the Storage Card (or, SD Card) directory

9, in the other pane, navigate to a directory on your desktop's hard disk that you plan to store your backup on.

10, press F5 (Copy):

11, press Enter; all of your card's contents are copied to your desktop computer.

Thank you - I bought the charger thingy - I got it at www.dabs.co.uk it was cheaper but still the official product.

Menneisyys - I have had to get my better half to explain the bit you wrote for me. EEK I haven't got tech brain but I know that I will use what you have explained - thanks x

Once you learn accessing your PDA from inside Total Commander, you will find this extremely easy and much better than accessing it via other means (for example, the Explore button in ActiveSync - that's far more restricted than the Total Commander way of access). This is why I recommend it so much :)

Thank you very much, the TC method works very well.
