Help!!
I've managed to pair my Dell x30 with my V3 Motorola phone.
Please can somebody help with the next step.
In my bluetooth setting i have "Dial-up networking Gateway"
I go to connect, and then open up New Connection. I type in a name and in the phone number i have tried *99***1# up to *99**10#, but to no avail. So i started using *9***1#. Now when i ok this my phone says please wait....and then just when i think i've cracked it, the phone says unkown command. I think i'm nearly there, they are both trying to connect but somethings still wrong.
Please help.
Danny.

Hi,
Just thought i'd add a bit of information as i was having the same problem till about 10mins ago when i sorted it and while searching this thread seemed to be high up in the google search.
I use a HP iPaq hx4700 and a Motorola v3 on Voda pay and go
I used the *99# number and the +cgdcont=1,"IP","internet" modem string to no avail but after a bit of hunting I found that for Vodafone pay and go customers the APN name isnt "internet" it is "pp.vodafone.co.uk" and after i changed that it worked a treat.
So for Vodafone pay and go customers try the following settings if your having problems connecting.
dial-up number: *99#
additional modem string: +cgdcont=1,"IP","pp.vodafone.co.uk"
and all other settings as above.

You're not going to believe this.... i went into a Vodafone store today just to get them to check over the phone/connection. Within 5 mins some bloke had discovered that Vodafone had autherised the GPRS but not the ARN INTERNET. Which is what you asked me to check and which they told me was already set up. This has driven me mad for the last week. All i can say is thanks for all your help.....Sorry the muppets at Vodafone messed up.

Don't pay for them - just loan one for some hours.

Well, if you can loan a (Sony-)Ericsson phone (an r520(m), a t68(i) or the t610/t630 are all very good phones regarding the ease of setting up a GPRS connection), you can give setting up the connection a try so that we can see where the problem lies.
Nokia models are also pretty reliable, but may have a bit steepier set-up process. Siemens phones, on the other hand, are very bad in this respect; avoid them. Sometimes it took meg hours to set up some Siemens S55 / S65 phones to be able to access the Internet via GPRS.
Unfortunately, Motorola phones, Bluetooth- and GPRS-wise, also have problems. This is why I recommend loaning a cheap S-E phone to test your GPRS account.

That sounds like a great idea only i havn't got a clue how to do it!!! Don't have much experience with computers!!! Is there any other way i can get on the internet without using my bloody V3 phone??

Sorry, I can't really help. I've downloaded and scruotinized the V3 manual, but to no avail - it doesn't even mention data accounts and/or APN input, which would be necessary
Not everything is lost, however. First, try to connect to the Net from your notebook or any desktop PC that has BT/IrDA. In general, desktop Windows is far more error-prone and non-standards-compliant than WinCE. In this, your GSM operator will be able to help you much more than with your Pocket PC.
If you manage to connect to the Internet from your desktop Windows, then, we will at least know that the APN/other settings are OK and can work further with your PPC.
Alternatively, you may want to check out the following URL and ask your question also there:http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=38

This is really getting me down. Tried all you recommended still no joy??
I've checked with Vodafone and they have confirmed that i have total access with GPRS!!

The people over at Vodafone don't seem to be up-to-date with current Pocket PC operating systems [;)]. In their tutorial, there're a lot of things that are just not needed on WM2003/WM2003SE devices. For example, the following section:
6. Tap Use dialling Rules
7. Select either Home or Work and tap Edit. (These names can be edited if you wish)
8. Ensure Country code is blank
9. Enter Area code as 0
10. Tap on Dialling Patterns
11. Ensure each box contains only a g
12. Tap OK in the top right corner three times to return to the phone number page
13. Ensure Country/Region code is blank
14. Enter Area code as 1
Why? Because, unlike its predecessors, WM2003/WM2003SE doesn't use dialing rules by default. This is why you don't need to touch this section at all (unless you've enabled the 'using dialing rules" checkbox, which is, in general, not needed) - that is, don't tap the "use dialing rules" link on the second screen where you need to enter the dial-up number.
This is also unneeded:
18. Set Baud rate to 57600
19. Untick Wait for dial tone
Via wireless connections (IrDA, BT), the "Baud rate" can be anything (even 2400). Furthermore, some mobile phones even hate when they can't wait for the dial tone (for example, some Siemens phones).
28. Ensure Bluetooth is on
29. Select Bluetooth Manager
Bluetooth Manager switches on BT when you start it, so, you don't need to start it by hand.
44. At this point the iPAQ will search for the device, the phone will then prompt you for a Bluetooth passcode - Enter any four digits
Four is not necessary - one will suffice.
You don't need to recreate your connections because of the above - it's just that in the future you may simplify the way you set up a connection if you also take it into account.
OK, back to the problem.
1. are you sure you have a full (not just GPRS WAP! Make sure it's real GPRS. Most of problems like this come from the subscription is either being not activated or being just a WAP subscription) and working, activated GPRS subscription?
2. are you sure you used the standard " marks in the extra string, and not some non-standard ones? That is, did you copy-and-paste the extra string from the Vodafone docs straight to the PDA in step 20? Then, that's why it isn't working - it uses a non-standard (cursive) " mark. Re-enter your extra string.
3. if none of the two above problems apply, you may want adding a modem resetting command in front of the dial-up string so that the latter becomes as follows:
Z&f+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"
You can also try removing either Z or &f0 if it doesn't work.
Furthermore, you can also try adding ^sgauth=1; before the original extra string but after the Z&f command(s) (if present); for example:
&f^sgauth=1;+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet"
The same stands for +CGQREQ=; - you can also give it a try so that your init string becomes like this:
&f+CGQREQ=;+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet"
The last two additional commands (+CGQREQ, ^sgauth) are mostly needed by Siemens mobile phones; still, it's not impossible that the Motorola also needs it.
4. Also, a practical issue: once you get your connection working, you may also want to try adding "",1,1 to the connection string so that V42.bis is activated, which results in about 50% compression with textual contents.

When you set up a connection, in the Advanced menu. Also seehttp://smartphonemag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14205 andhttp://www.smartphonemag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15667 (especially the linked threads from there!).

46. You will then be presented with a Network logon page
47. Enter Username web
48. Enter Password web
49. Leave Domain blank and save password if you wish.
50. You should now see two arrows on the blue bar at the top of the screen indicating a connection. Two small arrows with a cross indicates not connected.
You have now created a GPRS Internet Access Service connection with both devices

Danny.

Can you help me out a bit please. Where on my pocket pc do i change the ARN to +cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"??
Do i need to obtain a telephone number, user name, and TCP/IP setting from my network administrator??
I'm really struggling and i'm not much of a wizz with computers...need lots of help!!!
Kevbert
Hi,
It looks like your problem is that you haven't entered the Access Point Name. You need to add an extra dial string command. The dial number *99***1# will access the first Access Point Name (APN) that is available at position 1. So *99***10# will access the APN at position 10. The extra dial string that you require is +cgdcont=1,"IP","APNname" where APNname is the APN for the phone network that you are using. For example, for Vodafone UK, the extra dial string would be +cgdcont=1,"IP","internet" and for Max in Austria it would be +cgdcont=1,"IP","gprsinternet"
Regards
Kevbert.
