bluetooth network

It's, fortunately, pretty easy if you don't have WinXP SP2. (If you have SP2, building up to the Personal Area Network (PAN) must be done in a way explained in the next forum post.)

1. pair your PDA with your desktop

2. in your PDA's Bluetooth Manager, choose New/Connect!/Join a personal network. On the next screen ("Please select whether you would like to join or host a personal network") leave the default 'Join' set; just press Next (WM2003SE users, note that this screen doesn't exist under your op. system!). After this, just choose your desktop PC from the list of the already paired devices.

Here, just press Finish and, consequently, click the bulb that comes up on the desktop PC. In the dialog box that then comes up, check in the "Always allow" checkbox and click OK.

Please note that the desktop name is "BlueTooth" in the picture above - you'll most probably see a different name, depending on whether you've given a non-default name to your desktop computer.

3, still in BT Manager, in the My Shortcuts tab, tap-and-hold the newly created icon and choose Connect. The icon becomes green:

4, download BizzDev NetUse fromhttp://joe.pconsulting.com.au/joe/netuse.cab ; transfer it to your PDA and execute it there so that it is installed. Start it.

5, choose the icon next to the Tools menu and enter any name (it'll be the local name of your share inside the \NETWORK virtual directory) in the upper (Local name) box and the name of your desktop PC and the share name in the Remote path field.

For example, if your desktop computer's name is WR2 (this comes to my name's initials and and index to denote that it's my 2nd desktop PC) and the shared directory in the form of

\\<desktop computer's name>\<directory name>

If you are unsure about your computer name, go to Start Menu/Settings/System/Name (I'm not sure about this - I have Finnish Windows and just tried to guess what was the original English name)

Now, on the following screen,

if you have a non-restricted share on your PC, just click OK.

6, in the list on the third image above, the new mapping appears:

Just click it, and you'll be redirected to the contents of this directory at once, inside File Explorer:

Please note that you can always return here by clicking the second 'memory card' icon in the below (it's highlighted in the image!) or clicking the up arrow next to Open.

Now, you can get your favourite MP3 player. I recommend BetaPlayer (http://betaplayer.corecodec.org ) for this because it has decent network handling and very easy streaming over network shares, unlike Windows Media Player. Go to File/Open File, and enter \NETWORK\<your local share name> in the directory (please note that it's already a local name; hence the single leading backslash, as opposed to accessing shared directories). All the media files will be visible; you can play any of them and/or easily put in a playlist (for this, just click All in the bottom right and then Ok).

Please note that, as I've pointed out above, the mapped drive won't be visible in the root file system shown by File Explorer. To remedy this situation, you may get a registry editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\REDIR :

Here, click RegisterFSBoot and change the value 0 to 1:

Save the new value (in Resco Registry Explorer, press Ok and Yes). After a reset, a new Network (virtual) subdirectory will appear in File Explorer:

Please note that if you need more info on using the built-in Windows Media Player to access network shares and I'll explain how it can be done if you want to access more than one file at a time.

Setting up PAN with the XP SP2 BT drivers

If you want to set up a PAN with the built-in Microsoft driver of Windows XP SP2, you need to do the following:

1, In the above step 2, instead of leaving the default 'Join' on, choose the second, 'Host' radio button. ('Join' won't work - the PDA will just display the absence of the necessary BT profile on the server.)

2, on the next screen, click Add and choose the already-paired (please note that you need to initiate the pairing process from Windows) Windows desktop icon.

3, upon the first time of the connection, a bubble will appear on both the PPC and the desktop computer, where you will need to enter a common PIN key. Use, for example, 1. Upon consequent connections, if you opted for not using any kind of compression upon pairing the devices, no PINs will be requested.

Please note that, unlike with the Widcomm BT stacks, no PAN icon will be created in the My Shortcuts tab. This is one of the many reasons of switching to using the Widcomm or BlueSoil BT stacks under Win XP SP2 too.

WM2003SE users, please note that the above steps need not be done: in WM2003SE BT stacks, a new, Personal Network Manager menu point has been added to the Tools menu. It does exactly the same as the PAN-hosting option of "Join a personal network"

I have win mobile 2003 so BizzDev NetUse does not work
Any other way to do this?

It does work. I've tested it on both my iPAQ 2210 and PL720. It worked flawlessly.

Remember NOT to use network searching - it won't really work over BT (neither will with alternative programs - for example, Resco File Explorer). Enter the share name directly into NetUse.

Don't unzip it. Transfer it straight to your PDA and execute it there (just click it) using, say, the built-in File Explorer.

Are you sure you used the correct form?

\\machine network name\share name

Try a simple, operating system-level sharing and not that of the BT manager. It's most probably the latter that is causing the problem on the PC.

Thanks, the problem is that the ppc and all the other computers in my network see each other but when I clicked on the computer that has os sp2 it will prompt for a password for the guest account. In sp2 there is no way that I know to assign a password to Guest account. The same thing happen when I tried to access the same pc from my PPC. I just read the link and it explains BT. With the other computers I assigned a password to the guest account.

Yes, I can even access the share folder on the pc that has sp2. The problem is that I can access the pc that has sp2 share files or folders. It keeps prompting for a password.

I mean that I can access all others pc share files from the pc that has sp2. But can not access sp2 share files from others.

So where can we go with this? I am having the same problem with sp2 server. Netuse will not store my server name although I have got a PAN network connection connected to my ppc. I am using WM 2003 SE.

I cannot initiate the PAN connection from my 2003SE ppc. I can only start the connection from my sp2 XP machine.

I go..

New/Join A PAN/Host/ (select my pc) then i get 'Service discovery was unsuccessful'.

Any ideas? I dont want to have to fork out another £100 on a wifi SD card![:(]

Well, I dont know what has changed but I can now connect to shares on my server. I tried a different share and now i'm in! Report to follow...[:D]

Ok, everything has worked perfectly as per the instructions but I can only make see the network locations if I am also connected to activesync as well as the PAN.

Is this necessary?

PS is there any way to make a shortcut to my activesync and PAN connections? Too many clicks when using the broadcom stack although it is WAY better than the original ms stack supplied with 2003.

When I tested this on both my SP2 (MS stack) and SP1 (Widcomm stack) desktops, both worked without a parallel AS connection. It should work without that.

You mean you would like to see the 'Network with 'desktop name'' icon at the My Shortcuts category on your, say, Today screen?

I use PHM tools 'Traylaunch' which is quite handy but you need to input the exact location of the program you wish to run (although I have never tried it with any arguments) eg. program files\repllog.exe for activesync. I also run SPB pocket plus which Im sure you are familiar with? You can configure today shortcuts with this prog too.

I guess Im stuck with running both activesync and the PAN simultaneously? Not a problem if I can have some shortcuts!

Ok, I got the devices paired (sorry). Now, I have another question. Ok, I open BizzDev Net Use, and I type, aaa as the local name. Then, I type in my computer name, (which shouldnt be important but happens to be UNIVERSI-HCVGT8) followed by \a. Does the "\a" part need to be just any file on my computer? Does that folder need to be shared over my network? Thanks.

Please forgive an old dudder but I am somewhat lost -
I have a Bluetooth Network connection and I have BizzDev Net Use up and trying to run. I know the (lengthy) name of my PC but I cannot find a “share” – I cannot even find a \Network virtual folder.
Are the “share” names the same in each of the boxes and how do I find them? I have tried numerous combinations, all to no avail. Am I just old and thick?
Help would be much appreciated

I had the same problem (got it working by the way). To use a folder, you first must make it 'shared'. To do this, take any folder, and right click it, then got to "sharing and security". Here, click the box next to 'share this folder on the network'. Then, in BizzDev Net Use, do the name of your computer followed by the name of the folder which you 'shared over your network' (will look like...\\computer name\folder you shared. And it should work out fine. (I did mine with service pack two, and XP pro, so it might look a little different on your comp)

Thank you for your reply to my query.

Unfortunately, however, it still refuses to work. I have spent several hours over the past two days trying all manner of combinations without any success.

I am using an iPAQ 5555: I have a Bluetooth Network connection enabled and connected: I have created a folder “C\localbtnet” in the PC and have enabled sharing, giving it the share name of “btnet”: I have put various names in the top box and have tried “\\computer name\btnet” and “\\computer name\localbtnet” (and other things) in the lower box: I am still met with a blank page when I press “OK”.

If I press “Browse” or “Options” I see a Domain name. However, my PC tells me that it is set up as a Workgroup. Is this the problem? If so, how do I change it? – when I go into System\Computer Name\Enter Domain it tells me that I can’t!

Should I give up now?

Well, that is what worked for me, so I dont know. You have wm 2003SE? If so, make sure your not just enabling network connection, but that you are using the Personal Network Manager under tools to host a network that you add your computer too, then trying the DizzDef Net Use. It looks like you're doing everything else correctly though.
