Why some of the saved Web pages are unreadable?

Ever wondered why some of the Web pages saved with MultiIE or Spb Pocket Plus are completely unreadable?

This problem (if you save a Web page from the two above-mentioned PIE plug-ins, or just locate and copy the cached HTML files off the PIE cache as described in for example here) has always been causing a lot of headache around the Pocket PC community.

Now that I’m working on my latest PPC Web browser roundup, I’ve played with these files a bit and am proud to say it’s not a secret any more. These files are compressed with GZIP and can be very easily uncompressed and then, read with any Web browser.

Just rename these files to have a .gz extension and decompress them. Under Windows, use the .EXE file found at GZip.org (main page here; use the -d parameter for decompression); on the Pocket PC, CrunchIT for PPC from Noisette Software (unfortunately, the ZIP support in Total Commander/Resco/SPP won’t work – they are not GZIP-compliant).

Over at BrightHand, I’ve posted a lot of new information about this topic and a new, complete tutorial on saving full HTML pages with MultiIE. You’re welcome to read it.
