http://email.about.com/od/yahoomailtips/qt/et082104.htm :
In Yahoo! Mail, it's not only easy to manage your contacts, it's also easy to export them to a format that enjoys almost universal popularity and compatibility: CSV. Importing email addresses from CSV files in Outlook, Outlook Express or Gmail, for example, may not always work perfectly, but usually it does, and you get to retain all your email addresses.
Now, to export your Yahoo! Mail address book:
- Click the down arrow next to the Addresses tab in the Yahoo! Mail navigation bar.
- Select Import Contacts from the menu.
- Look for Yahoo! CSV under Export and click Export Now.
- Click Save when prompted what to do with the file download.
- Choose the location where you want to save the Yahoo.csv copy of your Yahoo! Mail address book.
etc.

Well, it's not very complicated.
Start Outlook Express ("real" Outlook won't be able to read the Yahoo export file! At least Outlook XP won't.)
As described athttp://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177123 ,
1. Perform one of the following steps, as applicable:• In Outlook Express 4.0 and 4.01, point to Import on the File menu, and then click Address Book.
• In Outlook Express 5, point to Import on the File menu, and then click Other Address Book.
2. Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Next.
3. Locate and click the .csv file that you exported from Outlook 97 or Outlook 98, and then click Next.
4. Map the text fields in the .csv file to the appropriate address book fields:a. Click to select the check box of the text field that you want to map.
b. In the Change Mapping dialog box, click the appropriate address book field.
c. Click to select the Import This Field check box, and then click OK.
5. Click Finish.
Please note that the default mapping Outlook Express uses is completely bad if you import Yahoo-generated files. You must manually override it as shown on this image:
That is, you must enable synchronizing at least the first five mappings.
Once the import is finished into Express, choose File / Export / Address Book / Text File and export your file. Note that it won’t automatically get a .csv extension – you must explicitly supply it.
Now, start the “real” Outlook and go to [b]File / Import and Export / Import from another program or file (default) / Comma Separated Values (Windows) (Outlook will install the converter from the Office CD if it’s not already installed) and choose the file. Now, importwing will be OK.

I've played with exporting/importing even further and found out that the email.about.com tutorial was flawed. You need to export right into Microsoft Outlook format (click the uppermost "Microsoft Outlook:" button instead of the "Yahoo! CSV:" button as said in the tutorial). The real Outlook will be able to import this file without the additional transformation with Outlook Express.

thanks for the new info -- however, I followed the other instructions; I have Outlook Express 6. It did work; I also did the same with the addresses from Incredimail. Yep, you guessed it. I made a bit of a mess even though I told it "no duplicates" I did a thorough clean up and synched with pda with very accurate stuff.
now, my next question: if I want to keep the pda updated will I need to repeat the process? btw, I always have such a sense of security when you're the one with the answers. Others are totally helpful, but "Menne..." you're the best.

In Yahoo, go to Addresses/Synchronize (not Import) and install the IntelliSync app: download intellisync.exe, execute it.
After install, click the Setup icon, enter your Yahoo data, click the Configure Applications button, choose the PIM functionality you need and the client for it – it may be Outlook (Express), some other mailer clients or even your PDA. I’ve tested the synchronization functionality with two of my PPC’s (WM2003 & WM2003SE) over ActiveSync 4.0; neither of them worked. Interestingly, it worked flawlessly with my Palm Zire 71. Prolly because I have ActiveSync 4.0? (Haven’t tested with previous AS versions.)
Ohh… thanks [:)]

Have a try ContactGenie Importer, it is just the software you want. ContactGenie Importer is a contact import tool to quickly import new contacts/leads received on a regular basis from known sources such as suppliers, websites, call centers etc, without the need to repeatedly map the source information to Outlook Contact fields.
