Hard Reset. Horror.

Have a look at SPB Clone. Then, have another close look. The demo keeps on working with NO lack of function.
I do a clone to my SD card most days and then if I have a problem, instead of hours of toil and tears, I run the clone exe and within minutes I am back to where I was before.
This is the best ever and thank you SPB.

I am old, conservative and ethical. I am retired and not part of a large corporation. My only interest in SPB clone is it's facility to restore my ppc after a crash. I discussed this with SPB and they told me that the demo version was fully functional and the only difference was the notification every once in a while. I offered them some money as an ex gratia payment for the few features that I wish to use. No answer. Am I being unethical?

Well, at least it could make Spb rethink their strategy - for example, invent a business model like that of many other PPC developers (that is, free for individual users) - for example, Cambridge Computer Corp. (http://www.cam.com/ ).

For home usage, the current price of $300 is just unacceptable if you take into account the technically superior Sprite Backup's price.

My PPC is a ViewSonic V35 upgraded to WM 2003. With SPB clone, after a restore, a notification appears about every fifteen minutes telling the user that this data has been restored with the demo version.
If it time expires I shall let you know.

Yup I agree, except that the SPB Clone Demo is FREE! It seems to work forever and has full functionality.

I haven't found anything on the licensing conditions on the official homepage. If it were free for domestic use (as opposed to commercial usage), the Spb people would have surely explicitly stated this.

I'm still not sure it'll work forever - that is, after the trial period. This is why I recommend the built-in backup app, which is, at least with iPAQ Backup, is probably even faster than Spb Clone (I haven't directly compared the restoration speed of the two so I'm not sure about this - will try to do this ASAP. I'll keep you posted. BTW, what Pocket PC do you have?)

Yup I agree, except that the SPB Clone Demo is FREE! It seems to work forever and has full functionality. This is what SPB told me. I can decide to make a clone, a few clicks and than a soft reset and my clone is safely tucked away on an SD card. If I have a catastrophe then all is back up and running in about six or seven minutes.
Your turn,
Cliff.

Well, actually, Spb Clone is certainly an overkill (financially too!) for simple one-device backups/restore.

I can't think of anything that, for example, iPAQ Backup isn't capable of - for free. Or, if you don't have an iPAQ, use the backup utility that came with it - xBackup for HTC converged devices, FSC Backup on F-S PDA's. If your PDA has absolutely no pre-installed backup software on it (or on the accompanying CD), get Sprite Backup. It's only some $20 and is well worth the price.
