Playing movies

Does anyone out there have problems playing movies on pocket pc. My Toshiba E310 just keeps freezing when I try to play anything. Can anyone help PLEASE!!

Tari,

Thank you for this. But, I like to use free programs and I think the ones you suggested you have to purchase. I am using Pocketdivxencoder at the moment and it works great. And it is free.

Thanks,

Glenn.

Glenn, it seems like the guys have given you a lot of helpful info. i'd like to add just one more suggestion for you. check out some of the one step programs from The Pocket PC Awards 2005 -http://www.smartphonemag.com/awards/category_2005.asp?catid=41#DVDCopiers - besides dvds, many will also let you convert an existing video file. and if you are using the Core Media Player, be sure to download and install all the plug-ins too -http://corecodec.org/frs/?group_id=53&release_id=219#r219 - for an enhanced audio and video experience.

Hi there,

Just like to than you for your help with my ppc. That program PocketDivXEncoder is a great tool. In you tutorial you had some links to postings for dvd to ppc. I went to these and downloaded a tutorial for this. It was a very long process, some steps taking up to 9 hours. I then tried using PocketDivXEncoder for this task. Worked like a dream and only took about an hour to create an AVI file from VTS, ready to watch on my ppc. If anyone else needs help on converting from dvd to ppc I would be more than happy to outline the "few, easy steps".

Cheers,

Glenn.

Thanks!

The second half was not so good. Lots of freezing and skipping frames. Do you know why this might be? Is there something else I should have done with Virtual-Dub?

Try exiting TCPMP at the beginning of when this all starts and then, after having preferably reset the PPC and restarted the app, seek right to the position you've just left. It's possible it's just a memory leakage.

Otherwise, you may want to further reduce the video bitrate from 300 kbps to, say, 200.

Hi Menneisyys,

I Watched that movie that I resized. The first half was perfect. The second half was not so good. Lots of freezing and skipping frames. Do you know why this might be? Is there something else I should have done with Virtual-Dub?

Glenn.

Hi Menneisyys,

Thanks for the info. Just got a chance to do it last night. Worked a treat. The only thing that went wrong, when I was calculating the new height and then trying to "save as" I kept getting an error message, something like "the video file was not compatible" or something. However, I left the NW and NH as it was, 320 & 240, worked fine. The NH worked out to be 235.4616, but as I said, I would not save. Anyway, I will enjoy watching the movie today at work.

Thanks again!

Glenn.

Thanks a lot for this. I will see how I get on with it.

Thanks again,

Glenn.

The message goes but the movie keeps freezing and skipping frames. What size should they be at and is this where the problem is?

You won't ever be able to play this video on your PDA - the PDA is just too slow to be able to properly decode and render the video. This is why you have to resize and downsample it before playing.

You should use, for example, VirtualDub for this. I'll try to post a mini-tutorial on this later today.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Don't really know what to do. I should of said in my posting but I am a bit of a lay-man when it comes to settings on my pocket pc. i.e. I don't know much about them or what the settings should be or where I should change them.

When I try play the movie I get a pop-up telling me

" Error
Player: Buffer size is too
small for this media. Try
increase it in player
settings dialog for better
playback!"

I have went into the settings and changed the

Normal buffer size, and the

Microdrive buffer size.

The message goes but the movie keeps freezing and skipping frames. What size should they be at and is this where the problem is?

Thanks again,

Glenn.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for getting back to me. First of all, I am using beta player to play the file,

On my device I have 7.10mb free for storage and 18.05mb free for program.

On my storage card I have 62.2mb free (1GB sd card).

The file type is avi and is 709mb.

I took the file from my PC and it is stored on my memory card.

Also, I got a pop-up message telling me the buffer was to low, or something like that.

Any help on this is appreciated.

Thanks,

Glenn.

Well, 709 MByte (if it's a traditional DivX/XviD rip) means that it's a full PAL resolution, high-bitrate video, which the 206 MHz Intel StrongARM-equipped, PPC2k2 E310 isn't necessarily able to play. It's pretty hard to decode for even WM2003 StrongARM-equipped devices to do so, let alone the much slower PPC2k2 ones.

What you need to do is resizing your video to quarter size (or to QVGA) and downsampling it to a much less bit speed - to around 200-300 kbps at most. Let us know if you need help on this. Then, all your problems will just go away. (Simply upgrading to the latest version of TCPMP (aka) BetaPlayer won't really help the situation, but is still strongly recommended.)

Need more information like:
1: How much free memory do you have?
2: What video format is the movie?
3: Where did the file come from?
4: Where is the file stored?
5: Anything else related to the file or Toshiba that you have.

Thanks

Bob
