I'm going bald.

I should stop pulling out my hair in frustration, but I've written 42,000 words on a novel this month for www.nanowrimo.org, I need 50K by midnight, and I had just finished another ~4K and was about to transfer it to my PC when my 780 froze. I can still see the dialog box where it tells me it is connecting, though some of the screen is missing text and other oddments.

I looked at this threadhttp://www.smartphonemag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16590 and this threadhttp://www.smartphonemag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=18470 and have come to the hopefully incorrect conclusion that because my soft reset does not seem to be working (?!) I would have to do a hard reset and lose all my data just to get my 780 moving again.

Someone PLEASE tell me there is a way to save my data. Normally I swear I would suck it up without all the salty cursing, hairpulling and virgin sacrifices to gods best left unnamed, but I don't actually have time to rewrite it so your technological genius is my only hope.

pussinboots

Are you telling us that you didn't backup your data to a CF card before trying to transfer it to your PC? I'm pulling my hair out just thinking about your dilemma. [:(]

If I had one I would have done that; it's on my Christmas list.

So was that a "You have no chance in hell, suck it up ***** and re-write everything you just wrote" or "I am going to bait you for being retarded a little bit before I then magically give you a solution"?

(Hey I can dream.)

If it doesn't connect on it's own then sorry, froze is froze.

Dammit. Thanks for replying anyway, guys. My replies are always flippant but my appreciation is solid--I needed to know and now I do. Thank you.

Think if I punch out one of my own teeth and leave it under my pillow I could score a CF card (and the drive for my PC) from the tooth fairy? Anyway, I have a deadline to go type at furiously for the next eight hours. Hahaha.

Okay, I gotta pipe in quick.... To our "dreamy" friend Puss.... I must inform you that your dilemma has not been elevated in this forum in vain! (Well, depending on whether you happen to be YOU or not...) We are all uncomfortably empathetic (and morbidly ammused) at your otherwise anecdotal circumstances... Primarily, because we have likely all "been there" to some degree or other, though not likely to the tune of forty-some-thousand words! Secondly, we are all "aghast" that you are waiting for Christmas for your CF card and in a similarly morbid way, thinking to ourselves.... "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?" PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! Run out to K-mart, Wal-Mart, Target, Circuit City, Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, Meijer, any Camera store or even some grocery chains and a number of Truck Stops in your locale..... You can usually pick up a CF for under 20 bucks! I bet you have pulled more than twenty dollars worth of hair out of your scalp just fretting over your fatally frozen machine already!

Anyway, 'nuff said...... We are all TRULY sorry for your loss, and can only hope that this little mishap has served as a sacrificial tale of mentorship for the rest of us.... and as a conciliatory measure, your martyrdom has just been embellished per this writ with some wit in this most appropriate arena for all time....

R.I.P. --> to the novel that nearly was.... unless, of course, you can type nearly 7,500 words an hour for the rest of the evening?

With sympathy, - crisp

Oh I'll make it. I only have 3500 to go now (I just made up most of what I lost since I posted.)

If I buy a CF card I have to have CF drive in my PC, correct? It does not help me to shove the data on something I cannot access with my other computer. I was under the impression the drives cost more than the card, and additionally, I am not sure I have room for another drive.

I could be horribly retarded though--it happens all the time! Let me know if I am.

(My original plan was to periodically upload my work to my webspace for safe keeping, but even though you guys have been really helpful whenever I asked a question or read someone else's, I still have not been able to get my wireless to work. So I DID have a plan for backup, it just has not panned out yet, and this is the first time it has ever frozen.)

I'd like to add something that you might consider Pussinboots. Hands down, Textmaker is the premium word processor for these devices....and it has an "autosave" feature that saves your work at time intervals that you specify. If you have the path of your file save set for the compact flash card, then if I remember correctly, the incremental saves go there. But it is about as desktop Word compatible as you can get....and the autosaves take place in the background, so you never have to worry about them. For us 900C folks, we save our stuff to the non-volitile flash rom so that we can even hard reset our machines and have the data survive.

[:D] Hey! We certainly can't call you a "sour-puss"! [;)]

Your "oh, well..." attitude is commendable.... hopefully, you won't have to exercise it very often after this incident, though! LOL. I MUST CONCUR with Rich on the Textmaker... if you aren't already using it, YOU MUST! It is VERY REASONABLY priced, and I would further suggest VERY STRONGLY that you consider also obtaining PLANMAKER, which is the EXCEL equivalent as TEXTMAKER is the WORD equivalent. Of particular note is the fact that BOTH of these applications far exceed the EXTREMELY limited capabilities of the resident POCKET WORD and EXCEL applications in the MOBILEPRO set. MOST IMPORTANTLY, BOTH are FULLY compatible with PC versions and DO NOT require conversion through activesync to and from the POCKET versions, which leaves MUCH TO BE DESIRED. All you need to do is save to your CF card, then place the CF card in any PC card reader, and Viola! Open and read, edit, etc... your file! BTW, I think your concern with "installing" a CF drive in your PC (I am assuming a desktop?) is overstated.... all you need is a little USB adapter for a CF card reader, readily available for 20 bucks or so.... many of them don't even require any software drivers to run, depending on how current your PC and OS is. If you have a laptop, the same applies with a USB reader, OR, you may opt for a PCMCIA type PC card adapter, which is also useful in your Mobilepro in the "right" slot, enabling TWO CF cards to be used.

Anyway.... happy choice-making!

CF Readers ( or drive, as you call it) are reletively inexpensive and would save you much aggrevation in the future. See link for $29 example

http://www.mobileplanet.com/us/product.asp?code=120178

It's essential that you be able to make periodic back ups of your novel (in progress)....so this doesn't happen to you again.

I'm sure you can locate a USB port to connect a reader to (or share a USB port)on your desktop PC.

how do you mean soft reset isn't working? [?]

hm probably i'm too late to ask..

nope. i never have. [:D]

ok, lost a few not important sms messages when experimenting with my bsquare phh, because i didn't try to save them beforehand. that's about all.

and lost a little .doc i just typed in, but it was on CF! so it wasn't my fault. :)

anyway just save everything to CF *by default*.. isn't it easy to remember to do that?!

Yeah, but you have to have a CF card in the first place!

When memory was high, the built in storage on the 790 was perfect for what just happened. If you save you work to that, a soft reset will not wipe it out. Actually, I think even a hard reset leaves built in storage alone (it does in a 900/900c). I can't remember, it's been a while since I had a 790. If money's really tight, PC storage cards on ebay are dirt cheap. Like this, is pretty common. 6825374428 Nobody wants them, but they work fine, and allow easy transfer from a MP to a laptop with no adapters.

i'm sure data will stay in the flashrom on the 790, no worries. :)
