H36XX PPC 2002 Upgrade, HELP!!

Hi there!

I have a Compaq iPAQ H3630, and I recently bought a Pocket PC 2002 Upgrade to take it from Windows CE to PPC 2002.

Anyhow, I started the update proccess. I backed up my current ROM Image, and that all went fine.

BUT! Then it said "backing up updated ROM image" or something to that effect, and then it said that it cannot connect to the device and that I should reconnect and try again. The only available button to press was exit, so I clicked that.

The problem is, is that I cannot connect my pocket pc!! I've been connecting it via a USB infrared adaptor, and the only way I could make it connect is by turning on the pocket pc and clicking the IR active sync button under connections folder in programs of the pocket pc.

So, I can't turn my pocket pc on, and therefore I can't connect! As I presume the update has wiped everything in prep for updating everything?

This is what is displayed when I turn the PPC on;

As you can see, not a lot! I can't get any further than this.

So is there anything I can do?

The only thing I can think of is to try with my old cradle, but that ha a serial cable and I have no serial ports on here!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's just annoying, seeing as I've just spend about £90 on satnav software and hardware for it!

Kind regards, Sam.

I think you will need to connect to the PC via a "hardwired" serial connection, rather than the current IR serial connection. If you check the CD it may also give instructions to update using a CF/SD card. Try searching this forum for instructions on how to do this.
In the long run it may be worth investing in a USB to Serial adapter.
Good luck!

Hmmn, that is what I was thinking.

I've just bid on two verrry cheap ipaqs for sale on ebay, they come with usb serial cables.

I'll have a look on the cd again. Updating by the CF card would be good though as I have a card reader on this pc. Actually, I dont think I can store to it from my pc come to think of it.

Thanks for your help [:)]

It doesnt work. Its DEAD.

It still cant connect even via serial cable.

Any other help?

If you bought the software (ONLY IF YOU BOUGHT IT, PAL)it is not illegal to repair your pda to PPC2002. ( May your conscience and your legal status judge you)

The bootloader should be fine. Check it yourself: with a full-powered battery in your PDA, unplug it from the A/C. Then press the power button + the action button + the reset button (in that order until you have they all pressed at once). Then release just the reset button, that's : keeping the action and power button pressed, yet. If you see a parrot and a USB remote update (or whatsoever), then you should move to the next step.

[You DO need the usb cable]

There are two communicators, AFAIK: Host11 and the Communicator (Multi-port/USB TTY).

In both cases you will need to shut down WCESCOMM (a process, not a running application). You will have need of a .nb0 file (the rom. Usually in the installation folder of the Upgrade app, i.e. C:\compaq\blablabla or C:\ipaq\blablabla, etc)

For Host11, rename the rom to nk.nb0 .Then place them in the same folder and run host 11
For Communicator multi..., it's intuitive (select the usb port, not any of the comm ports)

Good luck.

Ok, the Parrott thing works.

So what exactly do I do then? I got lost a little there. Do you think I could talk to you on msn and you could talk me through?

Regards, Sam.

I think I found the file I need;

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/894/huh1ny.gif

But where exactly do I put it to get it onto the ipaq?

By the way, I only have a serial port, with a serial port adaptor to convert it to USB. Do I need to buy just a USB cable?

Regards, Sam

A serial port. I had never seen one (bah, I'm lying)

It might work just fine. You must do the parroting up to the point where you see the beautiful colorful gay-plentiful bird. If you get farther, you will see the remote USB update message. So, get the parrot, but not the USB

I can only tell you that you will need the Multiport [which I mentioned]. It lets you use all serial ports.
You will have to figure out which [serial]port you are using, so you can tell the MP/USB-TYY.

Sorry. You will have to get the Multiport program. No links, no mail, no file! (don't worry, it's not that difficult to find).

If you put your claws... hands on an USB cable, you would probably prefer host11.exe . It's clean and fast.

BTW. That is just the file that you need: the PPC2002 ROM, congratulations! (Now give it a more amiable name... Do you like "nk.nb0" [?] ). Now you must get a HEX editor so you can remove the first 32-bits from this file.

The guys at my university use UltraEdit-32. You might start there.

Summarize [:p]:
(1) ROM file (16-32MB)
(1.a) Remove the first 32 bits of it (editor)

(2) Host11 (USB) or Multiport / USB-TYY (Serial)
(2.a) Will activesyng (process: WCESCOMM)
(2.b) Get the right port number, for serial. USB is straight-foward

(3) PDA in bootloader mode (parrot). Any PDA

(4) Start the re-flashing
(4.a) If a "Flashing done" message does not appear, something went wrong. Check the steps, again, and try once more (or twice, or thrice...)

Enjoy!

PS: Sometimes you might find the way to "change the bootloader". Just one advice: D O N ' T !!! [;)]. Unless you are a literate you is willing to install his custom OS or Linux...

I can't get further than the parrot, is that ok?

Ok, I have the Multiport program. The usb to serial adaptor is labled as COM4.

Only thing is, I'm stuck now, how to I get the file onto the ipaq?

Did you select the APPROPIATE port? (you say you have.)
Did you remember to place the nk.nb0 file in the same folder?
Did you remember to kill the active sync process (not just turning it off)?
Do you still have the PDA in the bootloader mode?

OK. Now turn on the multiport, select the port; you enter the terminal window. Now type (hit)return (enter) one or two times.

Now type: lnb nk.nb0
Loading should start

Tell me about your results
(BTW, looks like you have quite many cracked software in your computer [just an IP thing, sorry]. You will get burned [8])

Good luck with the PDA!

I dont know if I have the right program, as nothing happens where I hit return. Does this look right?;

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/3343/help1py.gif

Sorry, I made it a .gif to upload it quickly.

OK! I have the right stuff now..

romupdate.exe with the ROM file all in one file...

The romupdate program picking up the com4 to which my cradle is conneced...

BUT!!! It can't understand the command "lnb"

What next?

edit: HANG ON!! Now I can't get the parrot screen! ARGH!

Regards, Sam.

Oh boy...

I'm sorry. I have final exams these weeks. Try to do this without any more help! (I do want you to get this one, thought. And of course, that you help others, too!)

I placed a shortcut for host11 in this message. Get an usb cable and host 11. Cut the first 32b of the rom (let's say, the first two lines of dots in the editor), rename to nk.nb0, Kill WCESCOMM, connect the IPAQ in bootloader mode, run host11.

Clean. If you can't do it this way you will never do it. Give it your best shot

Hi member1495 & burnticej,

I had same problem, but i found a link:
http://www.freewebtown.com/ipaq/favorite.html
(it is easier, no parrot mode, no host11, no multi-port)

Try and enjoy!

Regards

RTOM, that is the spirit. You have an interesting link right there. But, have you tried it out, already?

Here we are talking about repairing a bricked PDA. The program to which I was directed is an altered method of the legal way... You are supposed to have all that stuff, already. Oh boy; anyways, you need to get your computer to recognize it... this cannot be done by member 1495, though

But I found your link "...2003... experimental" hmmm. VERY interestING. OOps This site is under construction. Did I arrive too early? Or maybe, too late! Could you get your copy in time?

Im having the same problem, but was able to get a little further than the original guy. Got the rom for my 3650, edited it in HEX, flashed with host11.exe, says FLASh DONE. Then what?? It just goes to the monocrome picture of it coming out of the case, with the ROM version # (im assuming) down in the lower right. Ive tried flashing it with the 2000 and 2002 roms located on the HP site, same for both.

This might seem simple [but believe me, I have done this tens of times]:
(1) Have you hard-reset your PDA after flashing? Wait about 5 minutes after a successful flashing and hard-resetting for the OS to start
(2) Did you remove all, but only, the first 32bits of the ROM? Maybe the ROM was modified, already. I recommend you to get the PPC2000 ROM from the HP site
(3) Host 11 must say FLASH DONE! at the end of the process. Check that the process don't interrupt before ending, even if it says Flash done! after it.

Tell me if this works for you

Hi, I also did these steps, flashing successful, edited rom file correct. But still the parrot again. I am sure that flashing was successful, but maybe my ipaq always starts this parrot. Is there a command to execute via serial connection that says the ipaq start normal, not the parrot(bootloader)? Hmm, o.k. I wait the 5 minutes and restart my Ipaq. We will see what happens. But thank you for your help!!!
