Tip #198: Back Up MS Reader Activation

What happens if you change Pocket PCs (or do a hard reset) in the middle of an eBook? If it's a DRM-protected eBook, you may not be able to finish reading it. You can prevent that from happening to you if you back up your MS Reader activation files. Back up the following files, which you will find in the Windows directory on your Pocket PC, to your PC:

Microsoft Activation.Unload
Secrep.dat
Secrep.dll
Secrep.xml
Secrepid.dat

Now if you have to restore your activation for some reason, first close all programs on your Pocket PC (Start > Settings > System > Memory > Running Programs > Stop All). Copy the backed up files back into the Windows directory on your Pocket PC, overwriting any existing files with the same names. Close all programs again, use File Explorer to browse to Secrep.xml, and open it. That should do it.

This tip was gleaned from a post by "Bri" on the microsoft.public.pocketpc newsgroup.
