I Shawna I'm glad you find our website very useful. I'm usually pretty busy, but I will try and stop in when I can to the forums here. Drop me an email though if you don't see me that often as I'm always available to answer questions.
No problem, I'll add this forum link on the next page update we do which should be later this week. [:D]
My vote goes to TravRoute CoPilot Live 4.0. I've been using it for over 3 years and upgraded twice. Great maps, easy to use, feature rich and a great value. My $0.02 for what it's worth
A great solution for those that have a handheld gps.... You can purchase a cable or if handy enough to make it,there are patch cables that allows your ppc and gps to comunicate with each other. There are plenty of downloads you can try and I have found mapopolis to be one of best in my limited tries of software. Also if there are any known programs for ppc's (I have a iPaq 3800 series) please let me know as I would like to try and see how well they work.
It seems there are a handful of GPS packages for PPC's.
I've been to all the major GPS specific and PPC sites to
find the best overall GPS package. Unfortunately none of them
clearly review or recommend them from the end user standpoint.
I simply need a GPS package (hardware & software) that lets me easily
plan routes and then guides me there, exactly as advertised.
I don't need to learn about sirf or anything else. I just need a GPS package that works as advertised, with accurate maps, voice guidance
easy trip planning, efficient memory usuage, etc.
I've to a T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone. I'd need a wired solution,
used in the car, with a Y cable. I'm in the US.
Does such a product exist?
Can anyone recommend the best package?
Most of these do Joe, CoPilot Live | Pocket PC 4, Navman SmartST Pro, TomTom Navigator, Deluo Routis, all of these will do what you're looking for.
The problem comes in how each one displays maps, and also how their routing algorithms are calculated.
Take a look at our hardware page at www.pocketgps.co.uk/gpshardware.php">http://www.pocketgps.co.uk">www.pocketgps.co.uk/gpshardware.php we have recently moved to a new server and the website is very fast now compared to what it was a few weeks ago. The Leadtek dashboard mouse (Leadtek 9531 and 9532) will fit the T-Mobile MDA, so will the RoyalTek Sapphire and Holux GM-210. We have reviews of these hardware at [url]http://www.pocketgps.co.uk. If you prefer the GPS handheld route connecting to the T-Mobile, then you can also do this by purchasing a cable for a Garmin or Magellan handheld.
Thank you for the fast reply.
So if I chose The Leadtek dashboard mouse (Leadtek 9531 and 9532), the RoyalTek Sapphire or Holux GM-210, do they offer a complete package of maps, cables, software etc? Which of these includes the best software that is easily useable for a non GPS engineer? When you said, " there is a problem in how each one displays maps, and also how their routing algorithms are calculated."
What does this mean?
Do they work?
This is the problem with all the reviews. They all talk about many features of the products, but if the products aren't useable, what good are they? Does any one product do what it is supposed to?
I just purchased a navman 4400. The biggest problem I am having is getting the darn thing to route me correctly. It seems to want to route through tiny streets. Not worth it if driving an RV.

i know copilot let's you select vehicle type, as do the garmin stand alones. i'm not familiar with what other packages will be more turn aware/vehicle restriction aware - i've seen it, just can't recall which other packages...
Hi Joe, sorry for the late reply but I've only just had notification of a reply to this thread (4 emails came in), not quite sure what happened there.
Basically no software will be included unless they say so, so never assume software is included. There are tons of bundles out there that include hardware and software but you will have to shop around. The Leadtek 9531/9532 are good receivers, I use them day in day out and wouldn't be without them.
Regarding "Which of these includes the best software that is easily useable for a non GPS engineer?" for US based software bundled with Leadtek's, check out TomTom Navigator 2 and PowerLOC Destinator 3. Navman offer mainly sleeve technology for older iPAQ's and as Gary said, the Navman 4400 Bluetooth Receiver. CoPilot (ALK) also offer a Bluetooth and CF card solution. All of the packages are good, but it depends on what features you are after, some people can't do without 3D maps, some people can't do without road avoidance or toll road avoidance. Apples and Oranges really.
Regarding "there is a problem in how each one displays maps, and also how their routing algorithms are calculated." each program displays maps different, some are good at display maps, some are poor at display maps. Some have what looks like roads, some have more stick lines as roads. Refreshing can also be problematic on some packages, routing algorithms are also different per each application. Some packages perfer to route you from A to B when you created the route and if you divert off the chosen route they will do their damndest to get you back onto that original route, where other routing algorithms will basically look at where you are, look at your destination and create a new route (re-route) from your current position. Again apples and oranges, some prefer one, some prefer another. Personally I prefer not to be routed back onto the original course. Why perform a u-turn and travel down 10 extra roads when I know that because I'm travelling in the same general direction there will be other roads I can take to get me to my destination.
All of our reviews talk about the features and tell you where problems occur, so if a feature isn't usable when we tested it and reviewed it, we'll tell you why it's not usable.
Every product does what it is supposed to do, and that's get you from A to B. Some will do it quicker, some will do it ina more professional matter, some will give you voice directions every 30 seconds where some will only give you voice directions when you need to take a turn. You have to weigh up the pro's and con's and see what you really want out of the package. We write our reviews to be as precise as possible. If there's one comment we have always had from our reviews at www.PocketGPSWorld.com is people have always asked us to write our reviews like a Quick Start Guide, and we do. By the time you have finished reading our reviews you will be able to pick up the software and take a drive and start using the software immediately. That's something our readers have always thanked us for. Some people think it's more of an idiots guide, tailored to the newbies and not for professionals, but it caters for both.
Hi Gary, how's it going ? We haven't spoke in a while! So you got a Navman 4400 then ? How many hours battery usage do you get out of it, or do you run it on the car accessory plug ?
Space Machine's Pocket Map has made some significant leaps in technology and will be launching more:http://www.pocketmap.com
They now have a 3D viewing perspective, full screen options, and high quality POI categoies such as Gyms, theaters and etc. They also report excellent state-to-state routing.
Space Machine will also be releasing a breakthough hardware/software product soon! Keep an eye on them! [;)]
I previously tried PocketMap Navigator (i think that's the same company) and while I liked bits of it, I was also disappointed with the routing. If this is the same company, and the routing is improved, then it can really be the one to beat...
My Bluetooth GPS article is in the April/May 2004 print issue. Hopefully it will be released online eventually too...
Note: Keep in mind that these GPS packages are commendably constantly on the leading-edge and have upgraded since the articles have been written, so check the company Web sites for the improvements.
