Is there a way to update the 900 with CE Net 4.2? I like being able to use Excel and Word but thought I may get some improvement with the Internet connection. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

cmonex has everything you need, and has even built a custom CE 4.2 .net ROM image for the 900:

Check under "official ROMs" as well as "custom ROM." Be sure that the bootloader version is 4.10 before flashing the upgrade ROM. (The bootloader version is found by clicking on an icon in the Control Panel labeled "Firmware-Bootloader Info." If it's a different version, such as 4.5.1-6, update the bootloader to 4.10 first before flashing the upgrade ROM.) cmonex' e-mail address is given on those pages if you need guidance from her.
