Using “Normal,” “Silent,” “Outdoor,” and other sound Profiles

Non-touch screen smartphones have a “Profiles” menu that allows you to switch your phone into different sound modes, depending upon how you want your phone to sound when you are receiving a call or another notification. To view or change these sound modes, or "Profiles," go to Start >Settings >Profiles. Note that different smartphones have different Profiles built in, depending on the make and model. The following Profiles are the ones shared by most smartphones:

  • Normal: This is the default Profile. It includes the default ringtone and volume settings.
  • Silent: This Profile will turn off all ringtone, alarm, and notification sounds. Selecting the Silent Profile is a good way to quickly turn off the sound on your smartphone without having to manually adjust the volume.
  • Meeting (or Vibrate): This Profile is intended to be set while in a meeting or other setting in which disturbances aren’t desired. The ringtone is set to Vibrate and the volumes are low or off.
  • Outdoor: To compensate for the increased noise level that can be in an outdoor environment, the volume levels are set to the loudest settings.
  • Automatic: As stated on your smartphone, this Profile will automatically switch Profiles depending on your calendar.

Note that you can edit each Profile by highlighting it and selecting Menu >Edit. The Edit menu allows you to set the name of the Profile, the ringtone (Ring type), Alarm type, Notification type, and volumes for each to your preference. If you do edit a Profile and later want the default settings back, highlight the Profile and select Menu >Reset to default.

You can select different sound Profiles on non-touch screen smartphones.
