How to read eBooks

Overview:

You can read eBooks (electronic books) on your Windows Mobile device using Microsoft Reader (microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp) and other third-party eBook readers. Check out the online version of this How-to to learn how to activate and use Microsoft Reader and find other eBook resources.

Here’s how to do it:
Microsoft Reader is an eBook-viewing program that displays eBooks saved in Microsoft’s .LIT format.

  1. Check to see if Microsoft Reader is installed on your device. It’s pre-installed on pre-Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Pocket PCs. If it’s not on your device, you can download it for free from Microsoft (microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp).
  2. Download eBooks from the Web and copy them to the My Documents folder on your device or storage card (see “How to find eBooks and other eBook readers” below).

Microsoft Reader’s Library screen displays the eBooks you can view on your device.

  1. Tap the Microsoft Reader icon in Start >Programs to open the application. If the application does not open to the Library page, tap on Library in the menu bar on the left side of the screen. The Library view lists the eBooks stored in the My Documents folder or sub-folders within My Documents. (The device comes with a My Documents folder in internal memory. You can also have a My Documents folder on your storage card. MS Reader will display the eBooks stored in any of the My Documents folders, as long as the storage card is in the card slot.)
  2. To open a book, tap its name on the Library page. The first time you open an eBook, it will display the cover page; the next and subsequent times you open it, it will display the page you were reading at the time you closed it down. (Commercial eBooks have security features built into them. Please see “How to Activate Microsoft Reader” below.)
  3. Tap Go To in the left-hand menu and select from the following options:
  • Table of Contents: Displays it if one is available.
  • Most Recent Page: Takes you to the page you had open the last time you closed the application.
  • Furthest Read: Takes you to the furthest page you’ve read.
  • Annotations: Displays a list of all the annotations you’ve added. To move to an annotation quickly, tap its entry in the list.
  • About this title: Displays info about the eBook.
  • Cover Image: Displays the cover graphic for the eBook if one is available.
  1. The easiest way to read an eBook is to press the navigation button left or right to move back and forth between pages.
  2. When you tap the title of the eBook at the top of the page, a pop-up menu appears, allowing you to display the Cover Page, Table of Contents, etc. The Settings option in this menu lets you change the font size and turn the annotation features on and off. It also displays information about Reader.
  3. You can annotate text on a page, copy it to another application, and more by moving the stylus over the text to select it. When you lift the stylus off the page, a menu pops up with the following options:
  • Add Bookmark: Add an annotation to a specific word or phrase. This makes it easier to find it later.
  • Add Highlight: Highlight a word or phrase in different colors.
  • Add Text Note: Add a personal note to a word or phrase.
  • Add Drawing: Make a simple drawing and insert it into the text.
  • Find: Search through the book for the next occurrence of a word or phrase.
  • Copy Text: Places the selected word or phrase on the clipboard, allowing you to paste it into another application.

How to activate Microsoft Reader
Free eBooks can be opened without any problems, but commercial eBooks are usually protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM). This technology is used to make sure that copyright protected material is not pirated on the Internet. To open a DRM-protected eBook you have to first “Activate” Microsoft Reader. To do this, your device must have a live Internet connection. An ActiveSync (or Windows Mobile Device Center) connection to your PC will do If your PC is connected to the Web. If you try to sync and open a DRM-protected eBook, Reader will ask you to Activate the program and walk you through the steps. You can also follow these steps:
  1. Make sure your device is connected to the Internet.
  2. Start Internet Explorer Mobile.
  3. Browse to Microsoft’s Activation page (das.microsoft.com/activate/en-us/default.asp).
  4. If you already have a Microsoft “Passport ID”, sign in. If not, select the No button and get one (it’s free).
  5. Select “Activate My Pocket PC” and follow the online steps.
How to find eBooks and other eBook readers
The Microsoft Reader Web site (microsoft.com/reader/us/shop/default.asp) has a list of commercial sites that offer eBooks in MS Reader (.LIT) format. A Web search on “eBooks” will yield thousands of references. Finally, a list of some of the best eBook sites can be found on our Best Sites Web page (pocketpcmag.com/bestsites.asp).
There are also a number of other eBook readers available, including MobiPocket Reader Pro (mobipocket.com) and eReader Pro (palmdigitalmedia.com).
Tip: Reading Microsoft Reader eBooks on non-touch screen smartphones
A non-touch screen smartphone version of Microsoft Reader is not available. However, there is a third-party solution. Tiny eBook Reader (goldencrater.com) lets you view non-DRM protected MS Reader (.lit) eBooks on smartphones, as well as plain text documents.
